As Southern belle Babe McGrath, who ‘isn‘t all there, she‘s schitzy‘ and Spacek does play the extreme opposite of her usually sensible suffering heroines. She suffers in Crimes, but it‘s hard to take her pain seriously, in her littleâ€"girl woman mask, hiding a quirky personality who paints polkaâ€"dots on her toeâ€"nails and dances in the moonlight adorned with feather headdress, saxophone and cheerleader tassles! * Spacek is the central character after she shoots abusive spouse Zachary Bottrell, all trussed up in her Sunday best, ‘"cuz she didn‘t like his stinkin‘ looks.‘"" She meant to kill him, but she only gets him in the stomach and then proceeds to offer him freshâ€"squeezed lemonade with lots of sugar, the way she likes it. Under its irrational veneer, it‘s a sad tale of truth and deception, hope and despair spiced up with racial injustice, macho cruelty, and love gone wrong in a small town. On the slightly erratic surface, it‘s the story of three loonyâ€"tune siblings, nowhere women who eat a lot. brown thinning hair. She looks after Old Grandâ€" daddy (veteran actor Hurd Hatfield) and kicks herself for telling the only man she‘s ever been with to leave her alone, due to sexual insecurity. Oldest sister Meg (Jessica Lange) has had way too many men. She‘s a burnedâ€"out singer who went to Hollywood and failed. Lange‘s mildly amusing with her blond razorâ€"shagged hair, and wicked denim jacket blackâ€"shade guise. ‘"‘Take a drag on death," she coaxs her horrified sisters, as she Hï¬tsupnnotherclgamteorlwlgsonlbottleof Old Crow bourbon straight up. She‘s cheap trash, but she‘s family, no matter what the neighbours think. The biggest problem with Crimes is the action or lack of it which mainly stems from this Pulitzer prize script, is the twisted stories tend to confuse, rather than stimulate. The three McGrath sisters share a tortured past, a father who deserted them, a dead mother with the family cat, and Old Grandaddy, a constant reminder of reality they don‘t want to face. Stirring moments occur as Meg, Babe and Lenny all reâ€"live the past through Babe‘s meticulously kept up scrapbook, the tears and the joys of growing up.
