On behalf of The Waterloo Region Nutrition Committee, I would like to correct Trudy Bricker (Dec. 10, 1986â€"Nuâ€" tritionist takes issue with dietitian‘s comments) on her comparison of nutriâ€" tionists and dietitians. Dietitians set record straight All Registered Professional Dietitians have obtained a baccalaureate degree in foods and nutrition or the equivalent from a university approved by the Canadian Dietetic Association. _fFeedback As well, they have completed an approved dietetic internship or have obtained a postgraduate degree in human nutrition. Requirements for the bachelor‘s degree include courses in general chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, LETTERS "AHEM!*" says St. John‘s Ambulance. Meaning what if the slap on the back brings silence which isn‘t so golden? What if the slap on the back lodges the object caught in the throat even further, blocking the airway altogether? A good flatâ€"handed slap between the shoulder blades with the person leaning forward should help to disiodge the stuck object. If it does not then basic first aid becomes a necessity. nothing but pizza, the choking was continuous in our household.) A good whack on the back seemed to do the trick. It brought tears to their eyes but the choking noise stopped. Great. Saved another choking victim! After spending a day studying the first half of the Standard First Aid program taught by St. John‘s Ambulance instrucâ€" tors Anne McCrae and Monica Zaâ€" charias, I realized how little I knew about basic first aid and how much I had forgotten about the things I thought I knew! For example, the choking victim does not need further blockage of his air, he needs to be left alone with encourageâ€" ment that coughing will dislodge the object caught in the throat. Only when the choking victim cannot cough or even talk, should you try to help. That‘s when the back slapping begins. I must confess. I am one of the many people who used to run to someone‘s aid when it appeared they were choking. (Having two small children who like I had previously heard that the 16â€"hour "I‘m not aware of any ill feelings between the Twin Cities, so I don‘t see the necessity for a committee,"‘ Kathy Hammond Fitness Forum Fitness Instructor intensive training developed by St. John‘s Ambulance was, at the least, jamâ€"packed with tons of information. After surviving the first eight hours, and going home feeling like a sponge that has absorbed its share, I could fully appreciate the responsibility the first aid instructors must bear. To someone who doesn‘t even have bandages in the house, the idea of first aid was overwhelming. The importance of getting a first aid kit and maintaining it at home and at work was not lost on me, however. Being in the fitness business it would seem inevitable that I would be called upon to perform some of my newlyâ€"acquired skills. Injuries such as sprains, strains, faintness, blisters, muscle spasms and even heart attacks can easily occur in the gym. (However, it amazes me to think that in seven years I have not had to deal with one injuryâ€"related incident. Either my parâ€" ticipants were careful or luck was on my side.) After taking part of the course I cannot stress enough that anyone in a healthâ€"related business should be expeâ€" rienced in first aid and should keep updating old skills. Even those of you who are NOT in a healthâ€"related busiâ€" ness would be able to use first aid skills in many home situations. If you were quick to slap someone choking at the dinner table, rather than to wait, don‘t depend on YOUR luck, call St. John‘s Ambulance. nutrition, the humanities and social sciences. Nutrition studies focus on nutriâ€" tion from a preventative, maintenance and therapeutic perspective. â€" Dietitians do in fact "prescribe the correct foods to someone who is recoverâ€" ing from an ailment.‘" This is based on the dietitians knowledge of biochemistry, physiology and anatomy related to that particular illness. Each therapeutic diet is individually tailored to meet a patient‘s needs. Thus, Ms. Bricker is incorrect when she sugâ€" gests that only, ‘"Nutritionists are aware of all structure; biochemical individualâ€" ity; digestion, absorption and utilizaâ€" tion,‘‘ implying that dietitians do not have this knowledge base. I must add that dietitians also counsel individuals on "preventative‘‘ nutrition, based on the Canada‘s Food Guide. In closing, The Waterloo Region Nutriâ€" tion Committee agrees with Michael Houston and Jay Thomson‘s recommenâ€" ‘"Since I‘ve lived here, I‘ve never noticed enough bad feelings on either side to warrant a comâ€" mittee," Gail Filliter Waterioo is a committee necessary to foster good relations between the Twin Cities? Question asked on King Street Should have limited hours on Sundays As a citizen of this retail community I want to express my views regarding Sunday shopping. I believe that stores should be open Sunday until 4 p.m. It would help everyone get their Christmas shopping done. If you forget something on dations (Letters, Dec. 17, 1986) for consuming a "balanced diet selected from whole grains, vegetables, meat and meat substitutes, dairy products and fruit as the safest and best way to maintain optimal health." Anyone who has ever ridden a horse knows that as soon as you get on its back, you have to let it know who‘s boss. Otherwise you will sit there, like a poor schnook, while it grazes or meanders hack to the stable. Â¥ou also know that it is capable of intention of doing so unless forced to. The energy is there, but not the impetus to use it. And so it is with us. The human mind is the only thing about us that is human; all the rest is animal, highly developed, but animal nevertheless, with all the animal aversion to unnecessary exerâ€" We can see this clearly in the phenomenon of getting your "second wind." You start off in a long distance race full of vim and vigor, but before long, your body is screaming, "I‘ve had it‘"; and just to prove it, you can hardly breathe and your legs seem about to colâ€" lapse. Now comes the moment of truth. You can let your body decide to quit; or you can say "I‘m not buying that nonsense, you‘re going to keep going till I say you can stop." In which case, you will find that the "fatigue‘" gradually or suddenâ€" ly, passes away and you feel that you can keep on running indefinitely. It is not that you suddenly found a new source of energy. It was there all the time; but you overcame the animal aversion to use it, just as a horse will keep going if it is coerced to do so. The need to get your second wind occurs whenever you have a prolonged task to do, whether it be physical or mental. When you have some studying Bridget Davidson, R.P.Dt. Waterloo Region Nutrition Committee "I think it‘s a good idea. They are so close together that they have to get along," WATERLOO: , but has no Waterioo CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21, 1987 Geoffrey Fellows you must do, don‘t you reach a point when your body is saying, "I can‘t take any more, I‘ve got to go for a pizza?" _ We are continually faced with the need to crack the whip and overcome the body‘s distaste for work, and whenever we do, we find the body will acquiesce and do as it‘s told. This means that the great majority of us miss the far greater accomplishâ€" ments of which we are capable by allowing the body to decide when to quit. You already have six days to buy it The people who accomplish so much during their lives have obviously learned the secret of selfâ€"control, and lt‘hus enjoy richer and more abundant ives. Here are my views on Sunday shopâ€" ping: My opinion is that Sunday is the Lord‘s Day where people spend their time with their family. Everyone has six days to shop. If you forget to buy something during those six days, it can‘t be that important, so it can wait until Monday. If {ou examine all your bad habits, you‘ll find out what you‘ve allowed the animal to get away with. On the other hand, there is no reason why the animal desires cannot be indulged, provided you are always calling the shots as to when, where, and how much. (Mr. Feliows is the founder of the Human Resource Development Instiâ€" tute, P.O. Box 642, Cambridge, NiR 5W1) After all, you possess, inhabit, and operate this animal, upon which you are entirely dependent as long as you‘re on this earth, so you should look to its wellâ€"being in every way possible; at the same time, we should be aware that it has immense resources and energy that we shall only discover by pushing it to its limits. Saturday, you can buy it Sunday, or if there are no groceries in the house you can buy them that day. "I don‘t know if it‘s necessary. 1ey seem to get along pretty John Ireland RR 1 Ariss, Ont.
