After four days of practice under head coach Wayne Gowing of Wilfrid Laurier University the team will meet a Soviet underâ€"17 team for three games, one of which will be played Dec. 29 at the Kitchener auditorium. The Flesherton native who played junior C hockey for the Port Elgin Bears last season made a lasting impression at the underâ€"17 camp last summer at University of Waterloo‘s Columâ€" bia Icefield. In five games he had two goals and five assists. Mobility is the quality that has helped the 16â€"yearâ€"old defenceâ€" man get selected to the Ontario underâ€"17 team and it had to be one of the reasons Siskins wanted him as well. Although Pegg stresses that defence comes first for a deâ€" fenceman he likes to add the occasional burst of offence. Against the Soviets, however, he knows he must be patient. Pegg played his minor hockey up to bantam in Flesherton. From there he joined the Bears and scored 28 goals and 42 assists before being named the team‘s rookie of the year. ‘"‘There was a misunderstandâ€" ing," said Pegg. "They thought I was going to play (tier two hockey) in Owen Sound but it didn‘t work out that way. Then (Siskins manager) Pete (Brill) approached me and asked me if I wanted to play for the Siskins." He says Siskins almost missed recruiting him and he wasn‘t approached until the final day of the underâ€"17 camp. Pegg says he‘s had some bad luck on offence so far with Siskins due to hitting goalposts and such things but he did score his second goal for the Midwesâ€" tern Junior B Hockey League team Friday night as Siskins beat Listowel Cyclones 7â€"2 at the Waterloo arena. Don Oberle, Mike Barbeau and Buckeridge were all out of the lineup with injuries and Mike Fair was serving a suspension when Siskins lost 7â€"4 to the visiting Stratford Cullitons on Sunday. Cullitons, who lead the league with a 23â€"3â€"0 record as of Sunday, had two goals from Kevin Lee and singles from Bryn Gladding, Colin Hahnfield, Pierrick Maia, John Uniac and Tim Taylor. Rob Hunter had two goals in that game. Other Waterloo scorers were Peter Buckeridge, Jeff Neumann, Greg Munroe and Mike Gingerich. Dean DeSilva scored twice for the secondâ€"place Siskins, whose record fell to 20â€"6â€"1 with the loss. Gingerich and Hunter added single goals. Siskins play host to Cambridge Winter Hawks Sunday at 7: 30 at the Waterloo arena. student at KCI. ‘"But I had a good camp and did everything I could. I guess it worked out."
