PAGE " - WATERLOO CHRONtCLE, WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER IO, UNH, Exchange student says S. Africa not always as we see it Waterloo resident Sherrie Cochrane is currently on a one-year exchange to South Africa as part of a Waterloo Rotary Club Exchange Program. Her mother, Barbara Cochrane, says Sherrie is extremely positive and excited about her temporary "new home" and has submitted a report- of Sherrie's impressions of South Africa her daughter sent homerecently. Many of these people live and dress like they were still living in the bush; they have no desire to be westemized. These people are extremely poor. This is due to their lack of education. Yes, the schools and teachers are available to them, but they refuse to have any part of it. There is really no strife concerning black people against white people; it is almost always black against black people. There is a small minority of blacks who want to control the government; they try to gain support of other blacks, but are usually rejected. This is the cause of the "Necklace Murders" you have heard about on television. People like the A.N.C. want support for their organizations, and whoever does not comply with their wishes receives a burning tire around their neck. It sounds grotesque but it is the horrifying truth. The army tries to find these murderers, but the other blacks are too frightened to speak out. South Africa has to be one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It is very diverse in its landscape and its people. In the north - Le., the Orange Free State - is very dusty and dry. In the eastern and southern Cape Province, it is very green and tropical. This is a very multi-cultural country as well. The whites populate only about one quarter of S.A. The main languages are English and Afrikaans. In the black population, there are numerous tribes, almost too many to mention. The biggest group of blacks is the Zulus and Xhosa's (eosa's), except click your tongue when you pronounce the Xh. The majority of the black people stay in locations or townships. These are little suburbs outside the cities. The blacks choose to live in these places. Here they can be free to practise their own traditions and live their way of life. I want to tell you two true stories that I bet the media back home never reported to the public. Similar to the A.N.C., we have a group All the nurses have complied because they are too frightened for their families' lives and their own. Once again the army and the police cannot do anything because everyone is too scared to speak up. . I want to tell you another story; it concerns a court case and two American journalists. it seems that they were sent over here to get some "fantastic film." They wanted to film a necklace murder, so they went into a location and found a funeral in progress. They paid a group of men to take the body and put a tire around the neck, ignite it and make it appear like a murder. Then they threw candies all around a trash can and filmed the children picking up the candies. saying that the children were so starving that they had to scrounge for food in the trash. Next they sent the film back home and got paid $20,000 for it. of blacks called the Comrads. This group is against the government, and likes to terrorize people. Last week the black nurses in all the major cities got a mo rand monthly increase, which was needed badly. Now the Comrads have sent a message to all those nurses that they must give their increases every month to this group or they will be burned. Now I know that S.A. has problems and there are terrible things going on, but the same is true for many countries where there is unrest. The last thing S.A. needs is over- dramatized stories. How many times in your life will you see a blanket of clouds on top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, or people skiing down immense sand dunes on the Eastern Coast, or the little grass huts in the small tribal villages, or the large populations of animals? There are National Parks all over the country where lions, tigers, elephants, zebra, giraffes, buck, ostriches all live in their natural habitat. The monkeys are all over the place. They come and eat right out of your hands. I am not giving a sales pitch, but I am telling it how it is. I am tired of everyone talking about the negative aspects of S.A. If the tables were turned and Canada and the USA were the targets, tourism would be non-existent for these countries.
