PAGE 10 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1986 Melodee Martinuk Chronicle Staff If you think there are an awful lot of new cars on Waterloo roads, you‘re right. o o According to local car dealers, a stronger economy and low interest rates are the two most important factors to have combined to make 1986 a banner year for auto sales. â€"Business Weekâ€" "It‘s gone very wellâ€"better than last year which was one of our bestyears," said Parkway Ford Sales Manager lan Hasler, who reported that 1986 new car sales will increase by approximately 12 per cent over last years. The Ford dealer attributes much of the sales boom to improved buyer confidence in North America built cars, and noted that the best selling car in Canada and on his lot is the Ford Tempo. Hasler added that, unlike last year when demand outstripped supply and buyers had to wait for their new wheels, this year most manufacturers overproâ€" duced and were forced to introduce special sales incentives to clear out ‘86 models. A similar story is unfolding at Waterloo Dodge, a new dealer, where general manager Bruce Lovelock said sales are far exceeding predictions. ‘"The whole lineup is selling well," he said. ‘"The manufacturers have been very aggresâ€" sive towards the market, offering rebates and special interest rates, and that‘s reflected in dealer sales. "*You‘ve got to remember, in the early 1980s people weren‘t buying. Now they are. The economy is good, people have got jobs, and as long as the economy is good we‘re going to be selling cars.Shelley Schlueter reported that sales continue to be "going strong‘‘ at Waterloo Hyundai, although she‘s not seeing the ‘"crazy, crazy boom" that occurred when the Koreanâ€"built car was first introduced to the Waterloo market. Schlueter noted that bargains offered by the big three auto makers haven‘t hurt her sales at all since Your money‘s worth . and more a troditional, nursery, spring or fall background At Sears. no appointment is necessary to get quality photographic portraits We welcome adults and family group» Each additional h person is only 95¢ POSES OUR F 3 SELECTION These attractive options available in addition to this offer White Background. Nevertheless, she believes sales of Hyundai in Waterloo will continue at the present healthy rate because the public will always want a "‘good, basic, valueâ€"oriented car." He predicts the late ‘80s will see a real glut of new cars on the Canadian market, because of the new plants opening here and the introduction of many new model lines. "By 1990 we‘re going to be able to produce four million more cars than we‘ll be able to sell. For dealers, the picture doesn‘t look too good. For buyers, well there should be some awful good deals out there if that happens," he said. Free Parking Front and Rear Chronicle photo
