PAGE 38 â€"â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 1986 Chronicle Special Only a few staff and faculty members at University of Waterâ€" loo have taken advantage of a policy on alcohol and drug addicâ€" tion, intended to encourage those who need it to seek treatment. This is the report of Dave Dietrich, assistant director, perâ€" sonnal department. _____ _ _ In 1981 the university initiated a policy whereby salary and benefits are continued for any regular employee who successâ€" fully pursues treatment for such a problem. Those seeking treatment for alcoholism or drug addiction discuss arrangements either with their department head, with the university‘s health services department, or with the personâ€" nel department. Arrangements must be approved by one of UW‘s viceâ€"presidents. All information is confidential. Employees make their own decision about rehabilitation. If they go for treatment their posiâ€" tion and benefits are protected; If they don‘t and substance abuse affects how they do their jobs, they suffer the consequences. Fewer than a dozen have applied for assistance through the university‘s personnel deâ€" partment, Dietrich says, but Few taking advantage of UW policy on addiction Wilgar promoted to new position James Wilgar, registrar and coâ€"ordinator of academic services at Wilfrid Laurier University, has been proâ€" moted to the newly created post of associate viceâ€"presiâ€" dent of the university. In his new position, Wilgar will report to the president and take on special responâ€" sibilities in personnel and student affairs. Dr. John A. Weir, presiâ€" dent of Laurier, said the new position was created to focus attention on the human resources at the uniâ€" versity, specifically as they relate to the student body and the staff. because arrangements may also be made through other channe!s, personnel may not be aware of every employee receiving assisâ€" tance.
