PAGE IO - WATERLOO CHRONICLE. WEDNESDAY. APRIL 2, 1966 Melodoe Martinuk Chronicle Staff Bob Westrop has made earning a living fun for himself. Today, instead of heading off to a large office with briefcase in hand as he has for much of the past 16 years, Westrop went to work at his own newly-opened antique shop, Hudson's Antiques. Hudson's is a cozy little nook at 41 King St. N., Waterloo cramed with furniture, glassware, old radios, books. prints and an assortment of odds and ends perfect tor use as accents in the home or as unique gifts. At the shop Westrop is buyer and salesman, manager and accountant, furniture refinisher and even, on occasion, a deco- rator. In other words it is a far cry from Greb's where Westrop had worked as a purchasing agent for the past nine years or Electrohome, where he'd been for the seven, years, before that. _ Now, the bdying he does is of a much smaller scale and at a gentler pace, and his purchases are the antiques which Westrop and his wife collect as a hobby. -- _ -. _ _ "It's been a drastic change. You talk about stress--purchasing in a manufacturing environment is high stress. To go from that one day to this the next, it was a shock, but a nice shock," said Westrop. "This suits me--1 like being able to do everything myself." Hudson's Antiques traces its beginning back two to three years, when Westrop and his wife Wanda "started going around to flea markets in Aberfoyle and Elora--we’d buy the odd piece, anything that looked interesting." 7 As the Westrops' hobby grew, so did the idea that some day they'd like to open their own antique business. The Waterloo couple set a timetable for themselves: when their mortgage was paid off, they'd try something on their own, - Well the mortgage has been paid off, and try something they have. Although they investigated other possible business ventures. Westrop said, they always came back to_the dream of an antiqnes shop. . Wk Wéstrdp has 'spent much of the past four months gifting through "junk" at auctions and flea markets to bpild up hit invtr!torpt, _ "That's the fun part of this business--the collecting. It's different from a regular retail business where you contact suppliers and they bring everything right to your door. In this business you have to go around and see everything for yourself." Westrop carries this on; step- further. He has refinished or rebuilt almost every item you‘ll find at Hudson? Mtiqurs: _ . In fact, when heh, not out front in the Shoo helping customers, Westrop can often be found in a workroom at the rear of the store finishing off some ,ewly-afmuired piece: _ _ A _ . . . "I staked rerinishingUt home as h hobby. It's fun to take old pieces and fix them, especially the ones that have been painted three or four times. Sometimes it's incredible to see what's under the paint," he said. Westmp doesn't claim to carry priceless antiques--that's not what his shop is about. Instead, his aim is to offer "afrorfaltlt things.“ "If yisu're talking about' high-grade antiques. Louis XV chairs, we don't have them. I buy things that people can afford. Things that I'd like to see in my own home--for a price I'd be willing to pay," he said. Which is one reason why Westrop is confident his business will succeed. His other ace in the hole is human nature. "Most people are born browsers-they like to just look around. with no intention of buying. That's where a general antiques shop like this fits in. It's a browser's paradise." he said. 1 Hudson's Antiques A paradise for K-W browsers, collectors FACTORY BIODEGRADABLE products should be used at your cottage for laundry, dishwashing, hair shampooing and general cleaning.
