PAGE 22 - WATERLOO CWLE, WEDNESDAY. MARCH 28. 1986 Considering the pace Doug Consiglio is setting on the Ameri- can college track scene, it might not be too long before local athletes will have to say they knew him 'when'. Consiglio has been making his mark as a runner with the University of Arkansas Razor- backs, breaking Canadian indoor records in the 1,000 metres, 1,500 metres and the mile. And while he is still officially a member of the Waterloo-based Athlete's Foot Track Club, other clubs, specifically in Toronto and Ottawa, will be trying to lure him away at the end of this NCAA season. Even if he stays with the AFTC (he has to remain a member of a Canadian club to enter national competition) it's unlikely he'll be seen very much around Waterloo because his family's moving down the road towards Toronto, And besides, he's reached a level where AFTC coach Pete Grinbergs admits there's less he can do for him. Consiglio is the first Canadian to run a sub-four-minute mile indoors. He broke Peter Rich, ardson's Canadian record of 4:01.80 set in 1978 by running the indoor course in 3:55.91. That's some accomplishment, but it's even more impressive when you realise that at nearly 6-5, Consiglio could hardly be considered to be built for the indoor track where there are twice as many bends and the bends are tighter. Steve Morrison puts some tongue into his act while competing in the hula hoop, one of several events during Wilfrid Laurier University's recent Super Sports competition. Morrison, a male cheerleader who used to be the man inside the Golden Hawk mascot uniform, was the winner among male varsity athletes and Brad Griffith was the male non-varsity winner. Basketball player Ann Weber was tops among female varsity athletes and Roberta Burke won in the non-varsity cat- egory. men-m O'Brien photo 'Can run, will travel' the key for Consiglio EASTER FEATURES - OCEAN LAKE c3585 J/gik, PERChi sum SALMON SHR'MP DINNER DINNER DINNER DINNER MPs M" 3595 $595 Try out 11 vandm of flett ' chm. As Grinbergs sees it, Con- siglio’s move to the south has helped him in many ways. -- "The coach (John O’Donnell) is a runner himself and he's built a really strong program," said Grinbergs.
