The latest Public Image Ltd. album - aptly titled Album - indicates that the prominent middle tInger which he has pointed at the industry and the buying public for so many years may be at half-mast. Not that this is out of respect for anyone, mind you. Lydon is still the consummate misanthrope, the bitterness a result of carry- ing the Sex Pistol chip on his shoulder all these years. But now he's using a PiL/Led Zeppelin hybrid as a vehicle for his pent-up anger. As a result, Album is the most accessible PiL record to date, about as mainstream as the band gets, This Is What You Want ... This is What You Get was actually a harbinger of what's here, a move towards a less abrasive, increasingly melodic sound. This isn't to say that Album is tuneful. Far from it. But at least Lydon has capitulated somewhat - his heavy metal leanings here are a lot easier to warm up to than, say, the deliberately alienating song structures of Flowers of Romance. Aided by ex-Zappa guitarist Steve Vai, the ageless Ginger Baker and Bill Laswell, this is at once Lydon's most impressive and diverse supporting cast to date. Rhythmicaliy, the aforementioned three- some represent the good old power trio. Baker's tribal rhythm patterns and Laswell's throbbing bass lay the groundwork for Vai's soaring, frenetic guitar work. "Rise", which is responsible for PiL's uncharacteristic position on the record charts, is about as close as Lydon has come to being a pop singer. But when he sings "anger is energy" in what is for him atypical laid back fashion, he wants to make it clear that the compromise is supposed to be subtle. Most of the songs are conspicuous throw- backs to Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti. "Ease" recalls Page's epic "Kashmir" and "Home" - showcasing Vai's unbridled playing and Baker's heavy-handed approach .. resurrects the ghosts of Page and Bonham. Lydon didn't endear himself to any of his Sex Pistol tans when he conceived PiL. Deemed too arty and pretentious by the anarchists and simply too annoying by the art-rock crowd, the band has found itself in a musical wasteland, partially due to Lydon's lack of direction, partially to his snubbing everything in its path. This Is What You Want ... was basically Lydon saying “I know what you want but I'll give you anything but". The patented swagger was still at work, but at least he seemed to be cognizant of an audience.
