iii.,)?,)"'-' a Marg Zavaros Chronicle Special As a continuation of last weeks column, these children's books deal with divorce, abduction and molestation. "r“Mom and Dad don't live together any- more" is about how a child comes to terms with the separation of her parents. The book provides some hints as to why indeed the parents do not live together anymore. Each parent emerges as a separate and opposite personality. Dad prefers to live in the country, Mom in a city apartment; Dad takes the girl camping, Mom takes her to the CN tower. The girl discovers it's fun to feed the horses in the country but it's fun pushing the buttons in the elevator of a city skyscraper too. With these adventures, two different lifestyles emerge. The girl expresses a wish that they were still together as a family unit and wonders if each parent will marry again. She also asks if one day she will "get apart" after she's married. She even expresses the fear that Santa may not find her at her new residence. The last illustration is of the girl smiling as she clutches a red heart she has drawn. The caption reads "I love my mommy and my daddy, My mommy and daddy love me too. Just not together." The positive things that come out of this story of family separation is the child's opportunity to observe and enjoy two different lifestyles, plus her acceptance that her parents love her each separately, but not together as a couple. This book is for the pre-schooler to seven years old. Mom and Dad Don't Live Together Anymore. Kathy Stinson. 23 pages. Firefly books. This book is photographically illustrated and stresses an awareness, not fear. It gives examples of simple questions often asked children by would-be abductors. Situations are enacted that may sometime arise in every child's life: a child is alone and the doorbell rings, someone on the street asks for help, a stranger approaches the child offering a ride saying they are sent by the mother, a stranger gives the child something. It is pointed out that these situations and others could result in abduction if the child has not been forewarned as to what to expect and how to handle them should they become a reality. Here, author Susan Newman suggests polite replies and how to avoid becoming easy prey. One of the best situations in the book shows the child going with a stranger to his home, realizing she is in danger and using the phone to alert the police as to whereabouts. This book is for the 7 to to-year-old. Never Say Yes to a Stranger. Susan Newman. One excellent illustration among many is to show your child the TV news report of a missing child and talk about the circumstances surrounding this report. Here again everyday seemingly innocent contact with strangers and casual friends is discussed with colour illustrations. The old warning, "Don't talk to strangers" is still a wise one but these two books explain why and what the result may be, if the child ignores this warning. You Can Say No. Betty Boegehold.
