Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Staft Victor Davis had the "times" of his life, or at least came close to them, at the Commonwealth Games trials held recently in Montreal. Davis was, predictably enough, the best of 16 Region of Waterloo Swim Clyb members at the meet but even he held a surprise by qualifying for the Games in three events instead of two. Best known as a gold medallist in the breastâ€" stroke in the 1984 Olympics, Davis was favored to win the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke events, which he did, but he also qualified in the 200 individual medley in 2: 06.2, the best time in his life in that event. Davis missed second in the IM by just twoâ€"tenths of a second. In the breaststroke events he swam what are likely the best times in the world so far in 1986, 1: 02.5 and 2: 15.2. Mike West, meanwhile, an Olympic bronze medallist, was the only other Canadian ROW member to qualify for the Games, finishing second in the 100 and 200 backstroke in times of 56.9 and 2:02.2. His time in the 200 was just sevenâ€"hunâ€" dredths of a second behind Calgary teenager Mark Tewksbury, who could have a very promising fuâ€" ture. "Tewksbury might be the world record holder one day," said ROW coach Cliff Barry. ‘"He‘s where Mike was five years ago only he‘s faster. We‘re hoping Mike can reverse that at the Commonwealth Games." He had to beat a standard of 1: 08. There will be 39 Canadian swimmers competing at the Games and ROW‘s Jennifer McElroy was 40th, making her the team‘s first alternate and meaning she may compete in the Games in Edinburgh, Scotland after all. McElroy was one of the ROW members considered most likely to qualiâ€" fy. ‘"‘We were disappointed and she was disappointed because she worked very hard and swam slower," said Barry. ‘"She just didn‘t have a good meet." Raymond Brown swam his bestâ€"ever 400 IM, but that was in a qualifying heat. He finished eighth in the finals. Brown also swam the 100 back in 59.0 to establish himself as one of the top 1517 yearâ€"old backstrokers in Canada. ;? BUCKET SPECIAL EVERY TUESDAY IN MARCH! Tyler Clair, also 15, made the finals in the 100 and 200 back and scored personal best times in both events to become the topâ€"ranked 15â€"yearâ€"old backstroker in Canada. Ron Clark made personal best times of 55.1 and 1:58.1 in the 100 and 200 free and Linda Gardiner excelled in the 400 IM and 200 butterfly. Jonathan Wakefield recorded personal best times in the 100 and 200 back and made the consolation finals in both events.
