EJ N Each twoâ€"week session of the As part of The Centre In The Square‘s Grand Piano Series, Ferrante and Teicher will perform one show only Sun. Mar. 16 at 8 p.m. Ferrante & Teicher were enjoying a fine reputation and a loyal following as classical pianists when their recording of The Theme From The Apartment was released. Selling almost a million copies in three weeks, the record pushed them into international promiâ€" nence. Followed closely by the release of Exodus, their position as a favorite concert and recording team was assured. A twoâ€"piano team doesn‘t happen easily. With Ferrante and Teicher it began when they were students at New York‘s Julliard School of Music. From the age of six they worked together with the same teachers, studying theory, composition, orchestration, and conâ€" ducting, but it was in Piano Ensemble that the two boys, matched so well in age and talent, began to play duets at one piano. As their friendship and abilities grew, their pleasure in twoâ€"piano music caused them to pursue a twoâ€"piano career. â€" "I"\;oipiano artistry isn‘t simply a matter of performers playing the same notes together. Ferrante and Teicher work just this way to create their amazing music. _ _ After graduation, they taught at Julliard while they developed a repertoire. They began a touring schedule that would eventually take them to almost every city in America. In 1960, the decision to record the theme from a motion picture with two pianos backed by a full orchestra was a new concept. The recording, The Theme From The Apartment, sold nearly a million copies in three weeks. As a result, Ferrante and Teicher reversed their idea of performing a classical program with pop encores to a pop program punctuated with an occasional classical number. The audience reaction was so overwhelming that they have maintained this successful format, and after thousands of concerts, 113 record albums, and 21 gold records, Ferrante and Teicher are still the most soughtâ€"after combination in show business. Tickets for Ferrante and Teicher‘s Kâ€"W performance are still available at $12.50 and $14. Contact the box office, BASS and selected ticket agencies.
