Ross MacDonald Chronicle Special Anne Murray Something To Talk About Heaven forbid. what have they done to Anne Murray! How dare they send our number one natural resource to Tina Turner's wardrobe manager. ls nothing sacred anymore? Actually, somewhere in a corporate board- room high above image-making Bay St., the decision has been made that it's time to update the plumage and repertory of Canada's favourite songbird. Looking at the cover, the message is clear - if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. "Em" would be Bryan Adams and Corey Hart and further explanation of the heroics of these two is hardly necessary. However, their exploits are cause for concern in the Murray camp. Until recently, the consummate girl-next- door has been Canada's number one musical export. Domestic and foreign sales of her records reached levels that many considered would be insurmountable in the years to come. Her charming, MOR material and staid, unassuming performing style have made her a popular concert attraction from Halifax to Vegas. Everything seemed rosy until Adams and Hart decided to usurp the throne. Something To Talk About indicates that Murray's marketing strategists felt that a new persona was in order, something that a younger crowd and Billboard could warm up to. Both the physical and musical transforma- tion have been carefully calculated and it The early bird catches a great value every night of the week at the Kitchener Keg. Unfortunately. these guys come from the side of the track that is completely unfamiliar territory to Murray and while she does her best to rebuff the country-girl image, she never gives the impression of feeling comfortable with the material. By stretching her voice to uncharted limits. she wants us to believe that the snowbird days are a thing of the past. 742-5562 It doesn't work. The thin progressive shell - Foster coats everything with a synthetic veneer - can't hide the fact that this is standard Murray fare. Dressing up light- weight pop in middleweight style doesn't warrant consideration as a major change in direction. Murray has taken a chance, but misses the target market she was obviously aiming for. And the question is - being an artist who has always played it safe - how will this change affect the housewife in Charlottetown or the librarian in Moose Jaw? As the bread and butter of the Murray clientele, will they resent someone tampering with such a trusted prod- uct Don't be surprised if Murray realizes this was a major career gaffe. Time will tell, but I have a feeling a return to home turf and the polyester pant suits is inevitable.
