Parents want vote, minor hockey committee informed Chronicle Staff Voting rights, grievance proâ€" cedure and organisational strucâ€" ture were among the topics brought up by those attending a meeting held by the committee reviewing the constitution of the Waterloo Minor Hockey Associaâ€" tion. The sixâ€"man committee had asked for public input, and got it from parents of players at a very orderly meeting at the Waterloo arena last Wednesday evening. Richard O‘Brien Chris Rice, the first speaker, represented a concerned group of parents who had been cirâ€" culating a petition among parents over the summer months. Five of the first six speakers to address the committee brought up the issue of voting rights. Rice asked that parents be given a vote at open annual meetings of the WMHA execuâ€" tive. He explained that the interâ€" ests of his group did not extend to wanting a say into who shall coach or hew a coach shall operate. ‘"‘The channels of communicaâ€" tion (between parents and execuâ€" tive) had become too limited and...the organisation had beâ€" come very insular," said Rice. Dan MacDonald echoed Rice‘s request for parents‘ voting rights: "It is a procedure central to the constitutions of other Waterloo minor sports organisaâ€" tions and minor hockey organiâ€" sations in other communities," MacDonald also expressed concern about the channels of communication between volunâ€" teers and parents and objected to the ‘"negative stereotyping of parents.‘"" He suggested the apâ€" pointment of a grievance office, with no other position in minor hockey. sations in other said MacDonald ‘"‘There is a large number of parents who don‘t have faith because of things that have happened in the past," said MacDonald. ‘"They have no method of bringing both sides together with an adjudicator." Marg McCallum and Richard Stilwell took the idea of voting rights a step further. As presiâ€" dent of the WMHA ladies auxiliaâ€" ry, a fundâ€"raising body, she asked that her organisation have s\S\‘g&?‘ â€"‘ yE L + 5 re 660 NC Pn * a0) & 2 â€"â€"fldflâ€"â€"â€". & wE nee? ao0N FOR MORE S\)P«P\.\)S o1 OC\’\‘.‘. &"sl1!l 8 iW » . _ MON.â€"WED.106 SAT. i PHoNE 744â€"6660 STORE HOURS: yuojrs rri 108 95 Ureasercesssesessssessssess seb e DRILL PRESS â€" TABLE MODEL â€" as is 12‘ B & W TELEVISION STORAGE BINâ€"WOOD â€" SIZE 4‘ x2‘x3"‘ GLASS FIREPLACE DOORS STEREOâ€"VCRâ€"STAND by GUZDORF SWIVEL T.V. Veenstra‘s high jump of 1.71 metres gave her the gold medal in that event at the York University invitational track and field meet as the UW team captured seven medals. Curran, a member of the squash team, won all his matches in the Eastâ€"West crossâ€"over tournament over the weekend in Toronto. Before that, he won all his matches in the western section OUAA championships including a 3â€"0 win over Western‘s Scott Leggat. a vote at the executive meetings she already attends. Stilwell asked that parents, volunteers and team sponsors be given membership rights and voting privileges. o Ruth Rektor approved of the idea of voting rights for parents and also recommended an indeâ€" pendent appeal board "for those who have exhausted one or more avenues." Larry Prentice said the aims of the WMHA should be spelled out in the constitution and was concerned about developing mental as well as physical capaâ€" bilities in young hockey players. Pat Whitney stood up to tell the committee that something should be in writing to prevent discrimination against players for reasons such as religion. ‘"‘The constitution should inâ€" clude a clause about developing character as opposed to mere participation,""‘ said Prentice. "The constitution should incorâ€" porate something that eliminates discrimination and protects the rights of the players," said Whitâ€" ney. UW Athletes SCRATCH & DENT ONE ONLY, or JUST Alderman Lynn Woolstencroft recognised that there is a ‘"cerâ€" tain amount of expertise in the community‘‘ that could be tapped by minor sports organisaâ€" tions. She suggested, for examâ€" ple, the formation of coaches workshops (because) ‘"someâ€" body out there can show you another way to handle things." Dennis Dosman, a former WMHA president, commented on the structure of the WMHA. ‘"When I was involved in the executive of the WMHA i often felt that too great a burden was carried by the volunteer board," said Dosman, who went on to suggest the formation of sepaâ€" rate operating committees for travel teams and house league teams. Dosman said both committees could operate under a minor hockey board that could coordiâ€" nate activities and act as arbiâ€" trator between the two commitâ€" tees. The committee chaired by Blake Hull meets twice this week to consider the suggestions brought up at the meeting. *88.00 *69.00 *1 5.00 *45.00 *150.00 *40.00 *25.00 *20.00 *39.00 *25.00 *30.00 *35.00 *785.00 *45.00 *25.00 (1 only) (3 only) (1 only) (2 only) (6 only) (5 only) (6 only) (7 only) (6 onty) (8 onty) (10 only) (8 only) (8 only) (25 only) (20 only) um WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1986 â€" PAGE 25 FUNERAL HOME _â€"~â€"â€" AND CHAPEL â€" thozie Westmount JAMES L.
