Making the announcement last week in Waterloo, Education Minister Sean Conway predicted the program, called the Coâ€" operative Education and Transiâ€" tionâ€"toâ€"Employment Fund, would double the number of students enrolled in coâ€"operative educaâ€" tion to 30,000 from the current 15,000. It is also expected the program will located first jobs for 9,000 students leaving seconâ€" dary school. Involved in coâ€"operative eduâ€" cation since 1973, the Waterloo County Board of Education has a coâ€"op enroliment of 415. The separate school board has just entered the coâ€"op field with a pilot program involving some one dozen students at Kitchenâ€" er‘s St. Jerome‘s secondary school. That enrolment is expectâ€" ed to grow to 50 students next year. "I‘m absolutely convinced that coâ€"op education is an essential part of educational delivery, not only today but also in the fuâ€" ture," said Conway. ‘"The bottom line for coâ€"op is that more than 90 per cent of students involved in coâ€"op education find employment or continue on to postâ€"secondary education." Conway siressed that, alâ€" though students still require a "traditional education", there is a great demand from the public to make education more ‘"releâ€" vant." ~ ‘"For students today relevancy means one thingâ€"education that leads to a job. In my view it‘s through handsâ€"on experience in the community that the issue of relevancy can be adâ€" dressed...working together we can help create a more relevant educational experience for our young students, and therefore a brighter future for us all," he said. Conway said that, while proâ€" gress has been made in coâ€"operaâ€" tive education, currently 75 of 166 school boards in the province offer some sort of coâ€"op proâ€" gramming, there are still many needs to be met: teachers must have assistance in finding placeâ€" ments; students must have help to overcome the financial barâ€" riers to coâ€"op programs such as additional transportation and acâ€" commodation costs; those leavâ€" ing school must receive aid in finding that first job. $13 million on coâ€"op ed programs WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1986 â€" PAGE 25 Thus, the fund will allow school Ontario to spend ommmâ€"=~== COUPON SPECIAL PROTECT YOUR CAR, VAN OR TRUCK OIL YOUR CAR, NOT YOUR DRIVEWAY! Depending on the rate of assistance a board receives from the province, it could reâ€" ceive $15,000 to $20,000 each year of the program to help students cover costs of coâ€"op education and between $30,000 and $40,000 each year to hire a resource perâ€" son Conway emphasized that the program, developed after conâ€" sultation with school board offiâ€" cials as well as other educationâ€" al, business and labor associaâ€" tions, is "flexible" enough to allow each board to develop the type of programming to meet its individual requirements.
