Some through sheer necessity, others look for a meaningful career or another interest in their lives. Now 20 years later women are still searchâ€" ing for meaningful work and many striving for a top position. Last Spring, television journalâ€" ist Isabel Bassett published her book, ‘"The Bassett Report: Career Success and Canadian Women". In it polister Martin Goldfarb surveyed 400 Canadian women who have been extremely successful with earnings of $25,000 or more a year. Of the many questions queried as to what it takes to get to the top, they were asked if they were satisfied with their lives and if being a femalehas been a disadvantage in their climb up the corporate ladder. Bassett found the price for success is too high and most women are not prepared to put in the long hours to get to the top (about 16 per day) with no social life. Many women said they couldn‘t cope with a successful career and marriage too. She cites examples of women who have made it to middle manageâ€" ment only to find it impossible to go beyond to "the invisible ceiling". Doctor Berry Brazelton, a leading American pediatrician, has written a sixth book related to the present day nuclear family. This latest one deals with how to hold down a full time job outside the home and raise a family at the same time. s He presents three family units: The Snows â€" married for 5 years with their first baby, The Thompsons â€" a single parent with her first baby, and the McNamaras â€" a married couple with their first child and another one on the way. Author Brazelton retates the concerns of each family according to their circumstances and work. Day care facilities are examined with points given as to what constitutes a good care facility. He broaches such complicated subjects as returning to work after the baby, juggling breast feeding with a job, quality time spent with the child, shared household duties, and adjustments for new time schedules.
