FM carries New Year show Coral Andrews Chronicle Special 1985 was a breakthrough year for Canada's FM, with a new '80's look, a tighter more access- ible sound, and rejuvenated atti- tude and a new, improved album entitled Con-Test, featuring 'Formidable Masked Man,' Nash the one and only Slash. The three man powerhouse of Nash, keyboard player Cam Hawkins, and drummer Marty Deller, is a popular trinity in this particular area, and have played here several times in the past few months to packed houses. With equally billed UT???) Vancouver modern-music con- glomerate Images In Vogue. there was no 'contest' here! !! At a well-attended Bingeman Park New Year's Eve bash, the win- ners were clearly FM. Nash and company performed a slew of new material from their current album Con-Test, includ- ing Why Don't You Take It? Until the Night is Over, Stop, Distant Early Warning, and video hit single Just Like You, which set the dance floor in motion. To diehard FM fanatics' de- light, the band delivered a pot- pourri of FM 'classics' as Nash referred to them including Dopes on the Water, 1984, and Phasors on Stun, plus One O'Clock To- morrow, from their 1978 debut album Black Noise, which gave FM notoriety on European wave- lengths and guaranteed them a huge following in North Ameri- ca. The 'bandaged man' ravaged his electronic violin, mandolin and harmonica, with the same predicted gusto and gothic fury he always pr0cures, though the initial sound mix was not exactly to Nash's liking, at numerous times throughout FM's carefully packaged set. All classically trained, musical craftsman drummer Delier's taut seasoned sonic beat, made this threesome polished and pro, fessional, the perfect way to usher in 1986, as Hawkins, who is also FM's lyrical mainstay, cele- brated with 'champers' in one hand as he and musical pals sang Auld Lang Syne. At the stroke of 12, Images in Vogue, now centred in Toronto, took over emceeing duties, But Images in Vogue, could soon be called Images In Vague, and are in imminent danger of being thrust into bar-band olbivion. All Despite their 1984 smash hit single Lust For Love, Images' repertoire is beginning to stag- nate, giving them no "image" at all. of their sqngs sound increasingly similar, in melody, rhythmic structure, and lyrical significan- ace if indeed there is any. Though androgenous frontman Dale Martindale is likened to and deliberately models himself after Psychedelic Furs lead- singer Richard Butler, or singer David Bowie with his smouider- ing vocal stylings and sinuously sensual stage antics, the band's material is simply not strong enough to carry melodic suste- nance, too much longer. Images In Vogue sorely need a new Image, or 1986 won't be a happy new music year for this trendy now "Torontoized" band at all. Music for two Trumpets, Organ, Soprano with Dan Warren & John Tickner.
