Chronicle Staff A house that has been one of the focal points of Wilfrid Laurier University for over half a century will fall to the wreckers ball this month to pave the way for a parking lot. *‘Bricker House"‘, purchased by Marie Askim in 1931, is nestled directly afljacent to the main campus. Dating back to the days when the institution was known as Waterloo College, and later Waterloo Lutheran, the house has served as home to many a student and university faculty member. Since Askim‘death in 1982 the house has deteriorated noticably, but the memory of what the house once meant is still fresh in the mind of Askim‘s only surviving child, se Stewart of Kitâ€" chener. ‘*Mother used the house to help people. She cared for people who needed any kind of help except financial," said Stewart. During the first five years of occupany, Askim worked with patients at Freeport Hospital, both at the hospital and in her home. The hospital work was the start of something that had remained intact until earlier this month. tlimen en enc n e ced ett 0 im dn o alaen d ce ues l tP l t ues 0e im t n e ccamni enc s the hospital and in her home. Askim left for Canada to teach at the Lutheran seminary in Saskatoon. After a short stay, he transferred to Waterloo College and Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. After the years of involvement with Freeport, Bricker House became the location of a number of community functions. In the late 1930‘s, Askim established a reading group which brought people of varied interest together for the purpose of reading and learning German and Russian clasâ€" sics. The family made the trip to Canada in 1929 and lived on campus until his death in 1930. _ _ w‘i-s‘tll-i.n;zw{or -;e;rla;lnfie;};)y Hher 7tilewly found friends, Askim bought the house on Bricker Avenue and the rest is history. She later became a founding member of the Council of Friendship and through that began holding folk dances at Bricker House. A variety of ethnic groups would get together and teach each other their cultural dances. Askim was also involved in arranging English for new Canadians and encouraging Europeans to come to Canada through a series of CBC radio broadcasts in German and Polish. At the same time, Askim began taking in female student borders as well as teaching piano lessons. ‘"There was always people there," recalled Stewart. "It seemed as though people slept everywhere except the bathtub." ‘"Hardly an afternoon went by without someone dropping in for a coffee," said Stewart. _ Whatever the event, Bricker House was someâ€" how involved. After her children had left home, Askim became the first house mother at Conrad Hall. Although she left Bricker House, it continued to be the home for many students and faculty members. The Bricker House coffee hour also became famous at the campus. Prof. Ralph Blackmore, one of the more wellâ€"known lodgers, spent 15 years at the house before moving on. â€" After retiring as house mother, she returned to Bricker House and remained in touch with the university, as both an honorary member of the WLU Women‘s Association and a friend to those who needed one.
