Canadian consumers ready to celebrate end of recession Chronicle Special Speaking to a group of 75 senior corporate executives recently at an economic conferâ€" ence for the Valhalla Companies Limited, Dr. Peter Andersen predicted that the économy would be much stronger in 1986 than is generally perceived at present. Andersen said that the current economic expansion in North America will prove to be one of the longest on record. Interest rates, he felt, are poised for another major decline, and the devaluation in the Canadian dollar which has already taken place, will be another factor driving the Canadian economy to an aboveâ€"average economic growth year in Andersen was much more optimistic on the outlook for labor markets than most other economists. He said that the unemployment rate which was just reported last week to have dipped below the 11% level to 10.9% in April, is now poised for a major decline which will take it to 9.0% by the end of 1986. The growth momentum over the next 18 months will come from different sources than last year, Andersen said. Consumer spending and housing are now just beginning to move into high gear as a result of lower interest rates and solid employment gains. The Canadian consumer has worked hard to save and to bring his debt load into line with income and this adjustment is now almost complete. Canadian consumers are now at last ready to celebrate the end of the 1982 recession.
