Easter Seals puts on final campaign push Cindy Pot"fy Chronicle Staff You only have to visit the Kitchener-Waterloo Rotary Children's Centre to know the money you donate to the Easter Seal Society is going to a good'cause, says Dick Peddler. Chairman of the Easter Seal Committee for the Waterloo re- glon. "In the Waterloo region, money is raised in a combined effort of three Rotary clubs: the Waterloo Rotary Club, the Kitchener Rotary Club, and the Kitchener-Westmount Rotary Club. They work together as a team,” said Ped- dler. This year the Waterloo region's target is $85,069. Peddler is optimistic about reaching the target because he said the Waterloo region is "pretty good" at reaching its goals. In Ontario, March is known as Easter Seal Month. Members of 235 clubs such as Rotary. Lions, Kinsmen and Kiwanis help to raise money for the Eastiir Seal Society. This year's target is $3.45 million. The Society, which is centred in Toronto, provides care for children up to 19 years of age whose activity is restricted by a physical handicap resulting from accidents, disease, congenital defect, birth injury or amputation. According to Peddler, money is raised by four methods. Snowarama, a 1100km snowmobile race, took place February 2 and the pledges totalled $7,800: a mailing campaign which reaches over 90.000 homes: and a telethon that takes place March 30 and 3) that wraps up the campaign. "Those are the three major fund-raising campaigns" said Peddler. "Then there is Thankful Tankful. a campaign where Esso service stations will be taking a day out where they wll be contributing a total of 2t per litre of gas, " from the dealer and " from Essa.“ "The balance that is leit over is divided in half. Fifty per cent goes to the Easter Seal Society and 50 per cent goes directly to the K-W Rotary Children's Centre in assistance to the child for services and care. None of it goes to administration," said Peddler. This year's 17-hour telethon is called Superth- on. It will be televised in 12 Ontario cities starting at 7 pm. March 30 and finishing at 5 pm. March 31. Organizers hope to raise an additional $1 million through this medium. "This year we tied in with London (channel 10) because we figured next to Toronto, it's the most observed station." said Peddler. "We didn't go with Toronto this year because with so many centres involved with the station, our number isn't as noticeable." After the money is raised in the Waterloo region, local expenses that are incurred by the Rotary clubs for mailing and advertising are first deducted. Peddler said they will have a bank of phones this year and the local number will be 743-3656 and the Zenith number will be 1-800-265-8944. "Every year we have the same people donating. This year we hope to get some new donors. We're counting on a lot of response from our mailing campaign. We hope that people will respond, instead of throwing it out."
