As mm? new crime prevention program, Operation PAL, drivers like Doug Eskensviller will be the eyes and ears of the community. They will be asked to report any suspicious actions to their dispatchers who in turn will contact the police. Cindy Povey Chronicle Staff Union Gas Ltd. has the drivers of its 800 radio-equipped vehicles in Southwestern Ontario acting as the eyes and ears of the community as part of its crime prevention program Operation PAL. Each Union Gas vehicle will be identified by an Operation PAL logo which comprises a handshake in a circle bearing the word PAL, which stands for Public ALert. The company is hoping the logo will become as familiar as the Neighborhood Watch and Block Parent sym- hols. According to Fred Hassan, operations manag- er at Union Gas in Waterloo, all vehicles out of Waterloo, Guelph and Cambridge areas have the PAL insignias on their vehicles for the program which started last week. 'yfryploytet' who drive the radio-equipped vehicles and the dispatch centre were trained in the program and provided with brochures," said Hassan. Hassan said all employees had a training session last week with security person Larry Hayes and Waterloo Regional Police was there to kick-off the program. Union Gas instituteii"'" Operation PAL Program Union Gas is trying to make its customer aware of the program through bill inserts and is trying to reach the general public through the news media. "Right now we're in the process of trying to encourage Bell Canada and the cable and hydro companies to come in with us. We're even willing to supply them with some insignias and literature. We haven't got an agreement at this point, but so far there has been a very positive response." Drivers will be on the lookout for suspicious activities and people in obvious distress. Through the radio link with their dispatcher. information can be relayed to local police. However, in the training session, employees were told not to become physically or personally involved in any situation. They were told their role was to observe and report. l "Literature was given to the employees and all the drivers will carry it around in their vehicles. The dispatchers will be the iink with the police in the area." The program, which is endorsed by the Gas Council. has also received positive reaction from the Energy and Chemical Workers Union, according to Hassan.
