PAGE 8 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1985 «â€"=â€"ANNOUNCEMENT =â€"â€"â€"â€">z Remember when you were young and skinny (?) and a relative would ask to see your museles? You would scrunch your face in a determined and ferocious way, and flex your tiny bicep. Everyone would be in awe and remark on what a strong man you would grow up to be. Unfortunately, many years back, a lot of little boys did grow up believing their brawn was a powerful chest and arms. About six years ago, while a member of a health club, I was given a routine to do on the weight machines which involved most of the muscles of my entire body. This was usual for women members (though there weren‘t many then). The men, however, were given a workâ€"out routine which consisted primarily of upper body strengthening. The main reason for this, other than the traditional macho one, is that it takes relatively little time to reâ€"shape a man‘s upper body. The instructors may have had the men start on upper body strengthening, so the quick results would encourage them to stick with their workouts. Women, on the other hand, have very poor upper body strength and face an uphill battle to see any noticeable improvement in body form. Women, particularly those not sitting in front of a desk or doing a sedentary job, reqire a great deal of arm strength to do even routine chores. Carrying children, housework, carryâ€" ing bags or boxes of groceries or doing any outside activity, can be done much quicker and with relative ease if the arms can handle the load. Women also get the unsightly deposits of fat behind the upper arm if no muscle tone exists. o One exercise which has always worked for men and will work for women from now until always, is the standard men‘s pushâ€"up. I can almost hear the groans. Actually a pushâ€"up is Shelly Schlueter, President of Waterioo Hyundai is pleased to introduce Dave McDougall and Serge Cournoyer as Sales Representatives. If it is done properly, with perseverance it can be mastered and repetitions increased, until a noticeable arm and upper body shape improvement occurs. Get down on the floor and put your hands shoulder width apart and flat on the floor. The rest of your body should be in a straight line behind. Support your body by resting on the tips of your toes. Keep your body trim and tucked, even if it is only possible mentally. Your hips should only be slightly higher than your shoulders. (Many women tend to aim for the ceiling with their rear ends, making the pushâ€"up truly difficult.) Tkis starting position may be enough of a workâ€"out for some women, to begin with. Once you can hold your own in the position comfortably without your arms shaking all over, advance to actually doing the pushâ€"up. Lower your body, still keeping your hips a wee bit higher than your shoulders, by bending your elbows. Stop when your chest and nose are just off the floor. Keeping tight and tucked, push off the floor with your hands (use the fingers as well) mustering all your strength, and raise yourself Bback to the starting position. The main problem with doing a pushâ€"up is that women, and men, lower themselves swaying their backs, causâ€" ing their stomachs to touch the floor while the head and chest are still up high. Practice the starting position if this is your problem. With perseverance 10 pushâ€"ups are just over the hoâ€" rizon. *For those who are skilled at doing the basic pushâ€"up try; fingerâ€"tip pushâ€"ups (relying only on finger tips to push up), or try putting your hands on a stack of books and doing a pushâ€"up 3 Charles St. West at Queen, _ Open daily 10â€"6 Kitchener, Ontario.
