All fourthâ€"year civil engineering students at Waterloo, they are entered in the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race in Winniâ€" peg, Feb. 8 to 9. Team members are Craig Hebert of Burnaby, Margaret Alden of Ancaster, Dino D‘Alessandro of Port Colborne, John Motherâ€" well of Victoria, B.C., Simon Hopton of Oakville and Dave Stevenson from the Kitchenerâ€"Waterioo area. This is UW‘s second yerarlr" in the race with last year‘s team placing seventh. Cindy Povey photo d hill delight Waterioo is the only Eastern Canadian university ever to enter this race, which is popuiar among universities and technical institutions throughout Western Canada and the northwestern United States. Sqmetime soon, the UW students would sometime like to move the event to Eastern Canada so they can host it. At the race, Waterloo‘s toboggan, Watbogâ€" gan I, will be judged on beauty of design, effectiveness of the breaking system, speed and team spirit. Naturally, the team‘s aim is to come out on top. Friday the team was experiencing some difficulties. They said when they tested the toboggan Wednesday, it was working fine. They figured they were having brake difficulâ€" ties. ‘‘They go up to 40 miles an hour, depending on the steepness of the hill," he added. Hebert said the concrete toboggans were a little faster than the wood. "‘It should be. It will also be lighter," said Alden, the only female on the team.
