_ Soccer players take the game indoors but it‘s just not the same Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Staft The end of the season is the start of something else for players in the Kitchener and District Soccer League. Long after winter has replaced summer and the outdoor season has drawn to a close, a variation of the game goes on indoors at the athletic complex at the Doon campus of Conestoga College. And a team made up of members of the Waterloo Athletics and Vikings first and second division KDSL teams is right in there, although it‘s no secret players prefer the outdoor game. It was Athletics â€" Vikings manager Bob Vanderveen who decided to put a team in the indoor league organised by the Los Andes soccer club, and his reasons are clear. Indoor soccer keeps players fit through the winter months and it also keeps them together, playing as a team. Indeed, the hard floor prevents players from throwing their bodies around while checking opponents. But perhaps the goalie notices more changes than anybody. The indoor game at Conestoga College is not like the sometimesâ€"televised game where the ball bounces off walls and the players begin to resemble bumpers in a pinball game. Athletics goalkeeper Tim Walker finds himâ€" self protecting a goal he says is six feet square, although to some it looks wider than it is high. Instead, there are boundaries to the playing area, including behind the net. Each time the ball, which resembles a big, slow tennis ball, goes out of bounds, play stops. "If you could play off the walls it would be a better game." said Athletics‘ coach Rod Desâ€" mueles. In a recent 2â€"0 loss to Los Andes, Walker stopped a penalty kick and that was an easier save than he could have made outdoors where the net is more the size of a barn door. *"*(The player) has nowhere to shoot." said Walker. "He has to just power it. ‘"‘The ball is like a pudding and it plays like a pudding. You can never get a feel for passing. If I‘d known it would be like this I‘d have told Bob to forget it." Forward Roman Teska, however, likes at least one aspect of the game. "It‘s good training," said Teska. ‘"*You have to work with the space available to you and that forces you to make good short passes. But it‘s also more dangerous." i Roth Nowak eW ADULTS aA BW CHILOREN ~~ Includes admission fee, round trip transâ€" portation, refreshments & boating materiâ€" als on coach BOAT SHOW TORONTO INTERNATIONAL * Canadian Power Squadron Member save 20% Season‘s Greetings and Best Wishes for 1985 . Richard O‘Brien photo With the offside rule pertaining to outdoor soccer cast aside, a player holding the ball on a twoâ€"onâ€"one can pass to a player who is ahead of him, the same as in hockey. ‘"It‘s easier for me than the outdoor game except you get a bit more of that twoâ€"onâ€"one Walker had a good game that particular day, but was beaten twice on the twoâ€"onâ€"ones that resulted from Los Andes players making the good short passes that Teska finds desirable in the game. But despite the good points of indoor soccer, players are waiting for the good weather and the outdoor season because they are the boys of summer. > 0 _ 7 l{.l l glm family diningâ€"a tradition since 1962 47 Erb St W Waterloo 85 Erb Road 5t Agatha Wz For that intimate Christmas Party, we have a charming banquet room that will hold up to 100 people Other rooms are available for smaller galhenn?s Full catering and banquet facilitres are available Home made Bread & Pastries Breakfast and Daily Specials . at both locations oÂ¥imems Angie, Theresa, Mike and Jim thank all our patrons, friends, ... you CHRISTMAS PARTIES ST.
