Jason Pong of the Biuevale colle- giate junior Knights was on the same basketball court as Kim Pong, his sister, who plays for University of Waterloo Athenas. During this game between junior boys and university women, Jason stole the ball from Kim and scored two points. And vice versa. Knights held a slim lead after regulation time in this scrimmage Thursday. then the teams played an overtime period and ended up tied Richard O’Brien Chronicle Staff Now this was an unusual basket, bail matchup. Then in a more conventional tuneup before the start of the Waterloo County high school bas- ketball season, Knights won once and lost twice to finish fourth in the Dr. Pepper tournament they co- hosted along with Grand River collegiate Saturday. Knights started the tournament with an easy 67-17 win over Preston Panthers before losing 72-40 to the eventual champion J .F. Ross Royals from Guelph. Knights then lost 67-48 to Forest Heights Trojans in the battle for third place in the eight-team tour- nament, Knights' coach George Huns- berger doesn't know if any other Junior high school teams scrim- mage with a women's team, but Bluevale teams have done so for some time now. Such games have been arranged with the help of Warren Sutton, former coach of K-W Reivers who is now Athenas' assistant coach. Tony Marshall had 24 points in the win over Panthers and Rob England had 13. However. Marshall was held to just three points against Royals although Hunsberger doesn't be lieve he was given any special at- tention. "When you play three games in one day kids tend to go up and down if they get tired," said Hunsberger. "He (Marshall) is by far our best player and we need him on the floor all the time to be any threat whatso ever." England led Knights scoring against Royals with 11 points and Stephane Craan netged eight. Marshall found the range again against Trojans as he scored 18, two more than Dave Slater. Pong, Marshall and Craan are Hunsberger‘s experienced players. He lost nine players to overage at the end of last seasoh. "They're very inexperienced by junior standards," said Huns- berger. "They're a good group in terms of trying to improve and I'm happy with what they've done so far." Hunsberger has been impressed with John Hamilton, a t3-year-old who has three years of junior eligi- bility. "He's coming by in leaps and bounds," said Hunsberger. "If he keeps improving he's going to be a good one." V The Bluevale juniors also have 6'I" all-Ontario track and field athlete Dan Pride in their lineup. Knights open their season Friday evening in Cambridge when they meet Glenview Park Panthers.
