Propane-powered car owners face certification deadline Ontario motorists driving pro- Dine-powered cars and trucks could be facing a $200 tine if they don't have their vehicles certified before the end oi-the year. Oct. 25. the Ontario government announced new regulations outlaw- lug the meling or use of propane- â€and vehicles in the province after December 31, which have not been inspected by a licensed station. After December M, anyone fueling In uncertifled vehicle could be fined up to $10,000, or face one year in jail. I While acknowlgdging there has been a safety problem in some areas because of improperly-installed propane tanks. Waterloo North MPP Herb Epp says the program doesn't provide a "reasonable" deadline for inspections. In an interview, Epp said he has been told by government officials that extension of the deadline will be announced this week. He added "one of the reasons the government is reluctant to announce the post- ponement is they feel they must keep the pressure on people to have the work done." According to Epp. there are be tween 50.000 to 60.000 propaneL powered vehicles on the road now in Ontario, and to date, only 1,500 to 2,000 of them have been scattered. "Many stations are turning cus- tomers “my, while others are booked solidly through January. In other areas of the province. there are no licensed stations to which motorists can be referred." The inspection will take one to one-and-a-halt hours to complete and costs $45-50. Epp said. He estimated at least a three-month postponement will be necessary to give all motorists a chance to have their vehicles checked.
