Illiteracy is a world-wide problem - even in Canada. Currently, there are some ttwee-and-a-half million adult Canadians who. according to the 1981 census statistics are func- tionally illiterate. They do not have sufficient reading skills to cope at a survival level. They are unable to fill out a job application, read directions on medicine labels or look up numbers in a telephone directo- ry. One in five adults in the K-W area are part of the statistics. We hope to train Mt new tutors at the workshop and match them with students. In the past year, so volunteers have taught basic read- ing and writing skills to 55 adults in the K-W area.
