Focus for Change program provides strong stimulus -it's JiiieliiFocus, for Change and changing the lives of single parents for the better is the goal of a new program at Conestoga College. Pat Arbuckle Chronicle Staff The 15-week course, sponsored by the Canada Employment Centre and Social Ser- vices, will be offered by the college for the first time this fall at the Waterloo and Cambridge campuses. Focus for Change is primarily aimed at single parents, explained Marjorie Komer who describes the program as a "bridge" from dependence on Social Assistance to self-sufficiency. Komer will teach the course at the Waterloo campus. "There is a definite need for the program,', she said. "We believe that most women on social assistance would like to get off it and raise their families without assistance. If they have the motivation. this provides an opportu- nity for them to become financially indepen- dent through further schooling or becoming prepared for the job market." Komer, along with teacher Ann Wine of Cambridge and eo-ordinator Judy Stewart, drew up the curriculum for the program during the summer after visiting colleges throughout Ontario where similar courses are offered. -- - . During the 15 weeks, half of each school day will be spent studying mathematics and communications (English). Students will be assessed according to their level of math and English skills and will be working on individu- al programs, advancing at their own pace, explained Komer. During the sessions, effort will be made to develop the students' self-awareness, self-confidence and knowledge of community resources. A 12-day work experience component will also provide students with an opportunity for observation and, in some cases, actual hands-on experience in a job situation. Focus for Change is open to any single parent who is currently on Social Assistance and although the 15 students who have been selected to begin the course Monday at the Waterloo campus are all women, men are welcome too, said Korner. She feels the course will particularly appeal to anyone who is "looking for other career goals to become self-sufficient through meaningful employ- ment or further training programs." Applicants must take part in an interview to determine whether they are suitable for the program. Because it is sponsored by the Canada Employment Centre and Social Ser- vices, there is no cost to the students and while enrolled they will continue to receive full Social Assitance payments.
