But with a beginner like Lisa Hilts to train, what judo instructor wouldn‘t? The ‘14â€"yearâ€"old Hilts joined the Asahi Judo Club back in January and it wasn‘t long beâ€" fore she was tossing and turning more expeâ€" rienced opponents. And when you conâ€" sider that Hilts hadn‘t taken an interest in a sport before, this was totally unexpected. In April, Hilts enâ€" tered the Southwestern Ontario Junior Olymâ€" pic Trials wearing a white â€" beginners â€" belt and defeated a blue belt judoist who had been the Ontario chamâ€" pion the previous year. ‘"‘That completely took me by surprise," said Zettl ‘"My jaw dropped ..." Even now Hilts just has her yellow belt, one up from white, as Zettl brings her along slowâ€" ly. But students like herself are exactly what‘s needed as Zettl, who founded the club in 1980 with just six stuâ€" dents, tries to build up the comptitive level. Hilts went on to win at four out of five other competitions, but lost at the Ontario Junior Olympics. Quantity and quality at Asahi Judo Club M Mem-bership has (Yt heen a long, long time!
