Molodoe Martinuk Chromcle Statt The next seven-and- a-half months may well prove to be the experi- ence of a lifetime for Waterloo's Ken Bragg. An 18-year-old grad- uate of Waterloo colle~ giate institute, Bragg Tuesday embarked on the first stage of a journey which will take him to do community development work in northern British C0- lumbia and Indonesia as part of the Canada World Youth Program. "It's a once-in-a-lite- time thing," remarked Bragg of 527 Twin Oaks Cres., in an interview last week. “I think I'm really lucky - not many people get this kind of a chance." Canada World Youth is a non-profit organi- zation which sponsors exchanges between Canada and 23 third- world countries. Since its founding 12 years ago, CWY has organ- ized exchange pro- grams involving more than 6,000 youths. The program is sponsored by the Canada-Interna- tional Development As- sociation. The Waterloo youth is one of 28 Canadians and 28 Indonesians tak- ing part in this ex- change. Bragg explained the purpose of the program is to promote greater understanding of the world through partici- pation in community development projects. "1t's to broaden your outlook on the whole world and what goes on in it," he said. rSPECIALISI§7 Bragg will spend the Exchange student will have better understanding FIJI-It, u "can.” I" --- --- --- cu gallery I 2 r"sf will 12 UNIVERSITY AVE E (AT KING) 886-?020 At Picture Framing World we real ments are claiming to be specialists makes us truly specialists "WW" giUtGaartsiog and Frarmog We Frame all types of unusual Items Medals, Coms, Spoons. Then the group will travel to Prince Rupert to engage in "social service work, in agen- cies, day care centres and with public health." ln mid-December it is off to Indonesia for Bragg and his group, where they will work at similar community de- velopment projects. After Indonesian Journey While in the ex- change communities, the program partici- pants will be billeted with local families and under the supervision of several group lead- ers. "When we're there our responsibility is to the community, to the group, to our counter parts - to commit our- selves, to really under- stand the community we are in and its Peo- ple," Bragg said. Bragg explained he first applied to the pro- gram because he was uncertain about what course to follow after his grade 13 gradua- tion. “I wasn't too sure what I wanted to do. I thought the best thing to do was take a year off." Through his work in BC and Indonesia. Bragg hopes to "ma- ture -.. (to come to) understand myself and then I'll be better able to decide what I want to do for the rest of my life." "I'll bet, ter understand Canada and its people PP» when I come back I'll be able to put more into the community," he said. Bragg said he chose Indonesia as his pre- ferred exchange country because "it's probably as different from our country as you can get." But, while he is ex- cited about the trip and the personal challenges if offers, he admitted he is a "little fright- ened" about what lies ahead of him. "It's a third world country ... travelling through it as a tourist you can dis- tance yourself from the poverty, but we're going to be right in it, working with the peo- ple. It could be pretty tough to handle." To prepare himself for the "cultural shock" of life in Indom esia. Bragg has spent the past several weeks at the library research- ing that country's his- tory, religion, economy and, most importantly, he has begun learning it's language, Bahasa Indonesian. "This is a good way of seeing really what's going on in the world," he concluded. "I've felt pretty sheltered living high- Fevling tired Rundown?
