Kathy Krulicki, presâ€" ident of the local chapter of the Muscuâ€" lar Dystrophy Associaâ€" tion of Canada anâ€" nounced that a total of $75,392 was pledged in an area covering Waâ€" terloo, Wellington, Oxâ€" ford, Bruce and Grey Counties. The amount pledged is about $4,000 less than last year‘s total of $79,000 she said. About $65,000 was eventually collected. Sandi Ingram and Verna Sheridan, both members of the Twoâ€"Plus Players, had lots of help from members of the audience as they performed at Monday‘s telethon. Shirley Catt (left) and Annabelia Coelho (centre) of Swiss Chalet in Waterloo presented a cheque for $1005 to Kathy Krulicki (right), president of the Tri-Countz Chapter of the Muscula! Dystrophy Association of Canada. Emplioyees of the restaurant have been contributing to the MD fund since February. A‘ ‘"The total was down Totals just shy of telethon target a bit from last year but with the economy the way it is, we were glad we got anything," said Krulicki. ‘"The econâ€" omy is picking up but people are watching their money closely. They gave what they could." About 150 volunteers manned the phones at the Waterloo Town Square pledge centre, located in Sears. Among those donating their time were fireâ€" fighters from the Kitâ€" chener, Waterloo and Cambridge fire departâ€" ments, civic officials, representatives from Parents without Partners, and the friends and families of local MD victims. Kruâ€" licki also said that four Sears employees were instrumental in organ izing the event. Money collected loâ€" cally during the weekâ€" end telethon will be used to assist approxiâ€" mately 50 MD sufferers and their families in the Waterloo region, said Krulicki. The bulk of the money will go to patient services to asâ€" sist â€" families in purâ€" chasing wheelchairs, appliances and lifts, inâ€" stalling ramps into their homes or to fiâ€" ‘nance activities for MD victims. "It will be used for the everyday needs they (MD sufferers) are going to have," she said. The rest of the funds will be directed towards research. Pat Arbuckie phot0s
