By Rick Campbell Chronicle Staff This week is Senior Citizen's Week. and it is Volunteer Week. And it is also Nursing Home Week in Ontario. and as it does annually, Pinehaven Nursing Home on Lexington Road is going to do its damdest to celebrate both its facility and the value of residents to our community. The third week of June each year is traditionally reserved as Nursing Home Week in Ontario and according to Pinehaven activity director Laura Holtom, it is a time to showcase Pinehaven and breed greater understanding of the quality service provided within. "We've got all sorts of activities planned this week," said Holtom Monday as a large group of residents waited for Waterloo MP Walter McLean to carve the ceremonial land mouth- watering) cake to omeially open the week. "The events are designed to get the residents out in the community as much as possible, and also to get the community here to see what we have to offer." Also on hand to entertain Monday was Gerard Dietrich, alias the Great Gerard who performed his magic act for the audience. Among the other activities planned during the week are trips to Just For Today From the Huehaven Sunshine June newsletter What's more. "The programs the public sees them participat- ing in are largely programs they have planned themselves." "If program: are not there to meet their needs, they create them themselves. They are more politically active, aware of their needs and can articulate those needs in a more construe tive manner." said bunt. McLean greeted the residents of Pinehaven with a brief discussion of his hectic week in Ottawa leading up to the Progressive Conserva- tive convention, and then spoke warmly of the dedication of volunteers who help augment the services required at places like Pinehaven. He retired from the department in 1963 at the age of 75. “I spent 48 years with the (fire) brigade," said Mr. Pagel as he accepted a piece of cake from McLean. "Heck, I was there before the horses were. Whenever I go downtown I still try to drop in and see the boys." (Continued horn page 3)
