Pat Arbuckle Chronicle Staff They can be found in almost any profession _ people who enjoy the challenge of new ideas and new ways of doing things. Too often. however, entrepreneurs lack either the initiative or the opportunity to put their ideas to work. To ensure that this entrepreneur- ial spirit survives and flourishes, the WLU School of Business and Economics recently established an Entrepreneurs' Club. HO BETTER WATCHOUT "We decided that a lot of people who can do creative business need. ed a place where they can improve their creativity," explained Elias Musa, a WLU economics graduate who founded the club with fellow student Jan Menkel. Originally established in Sep- tember of 1982 so that students within the university could meet other entrepreneurial students. the club expanded in February to im clude interested members of the community. Regular weekly meet- ings are held "to exchange creative ideas and to meet people from different fields." Musa added. With the logo "Ideas and cash get together when people get together." the group has enjoyed favorable response both from students and from all sectors of the business community including Inventors. manufacturers and small business- Unsure if you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur? Chances are Other police forces have an animal as their safety symbol but not the Waterloo Regional Police Force. Their symbol is a Wally Watchout, a character named after former Staff Sergeant Wally Scheifele. Scheifele (centre) was present Thursday to award an anniversary cake and poster to Jason Dupuis (left), winner of this year's Wally Watchout Safety Contest. Jason, a Grade one student at St. Agnes School, won the award tor his participation in the safety contest broadcast daily on CKKW radio. The cake is awarded annually on the anniversary of Scheifele‘s retirement trom the force. Also present for the ceremony was Dan Fisher (right) of CKKW radio. Entrepreneurs meet to expand their creativity you're not alone. According to Merkel, the word entrepreneur has more than 100 shades of meaning. Generally however, qualities that characterize a true entrepreneur are self-reliance, creativity. mo. tivation and self-assertiveness. _ "He takes work and whatever challenges that come with it - that is the reward in itself. He is not afraid of anybody laughing at his ideas," said Musa. Since its inception, meetings of the Entrepreneurs' Club have been held in various locations on the WLU campus but members hope to es- tablish a permanent location for the group in the near future in the core area. "We want to create a library of all money-making opportunities and entrepreneurial information," ex- plained Menkel. Included in the library will be catalogues, and import/export magazines all at the disposal of club members free of charge. The group is also in the process of contacting several universities and other academic institutions acroSS Canada in the hope of establishing other branch clubs linked by a newsletter to provide members with additional information and business contacts.
