She has played under all three of the symphony‘s conductors â€" Glenn Kruspe, Frederic Pohl and Raffi Armenian. A Drumbo native, Freund was firstâ€"engaged to play with the Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo Symphony for the Coronation Ball, June 2, 1953 when she was 14 years of age. Longâ€"time Kitchener residents will remember the gala event, a Vienneseâ€"style ball which was held at the Kitchener auditorium to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth IL. The orchestra has taken an interest in Freund‘s career since that time. The Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo Symphony Orchesâ€" tra Women‘s Committee awarded Freund a scholarship to study music in Toronto under Eli Spivak in 1955. While still a student at the University of Toronto‘s Faculty of Music Freund returned to Kitchener to play as many concerts of the four concert season as possible. Jim Breithaupt, Q.C., MPP Kitchener, was also studying in Toronto at Osgoode Hall at the same time as he was playing percussion with the orchestra, and he and Freund would commute home to the concerts together. In 1959, after her graduation from university, Nuala Freund settled permanently in Kitchener and married Art Freund, a trombone player with the orchestra for many years. Freund has been playing with the orchestra ever since, carrying on the tradition of both her parents, Kathleen and Dr. Geoffrey Bell, who also played with the Kitchenerâ€" Waterloo Symphony Orchestra artist Tilly Prudom. Prudom is a wellâ€" known local clarinetist who has,. among other honours, captured top awards at the Guelph Spring Festival.
