McKie makes her home in Guelph, and was a frequent director for the now defunct Road Show Theatre.Company in that city. She‘s also directed of the four musicals staged by Guelph‘s Royal City Musical Productions. Marg Schebenâ€"Edey in a mirror image prior to a rehearsal of A Bedfull of Foreigners. Victor Stanton photos Victor Stanton Chronicle Special When there‘s a choice between ‘"meaningful" and "entertainment," professional director Kay McKie says that in the spring, especially, I‘ll go for entertainment." Talking about the production of A Bedfull Of Foreigners, being presented this week and next by Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo Little Theatre, McKie adds that about the only message anyone is going to get from it is ‘‘if you‘re planning a trip abroad, make sure you do your bookings through a registered travel agency." The comedy, about a group of tourists who converge upon the same bedroom in a runâ€"down hotel in France, may not have anything of great significance to say, but it is, McKie suggests, «"good spring tonic for everybody."‘ For McKie, whose services are being paid for by Theatre Ontario, it‘s a return to a group she last directed ‘"*about 15 years ago." o Getting back to doing "a show with seven characters and one set after ones with 90 characters and a multitude of sets is a chance to do some directing, instead of traffic manageâ€" ment .‘ McKie is a recent member of the Theatre Ontario talent bgpk, individuals with wideâ€"rangâ€" ing theatrical expertise and experience who respond to applications for professional guidâ€" ance from community theatre groups throughâ€" out the province. "There‘s really not much difference in quality between professionals and amateurs, and given the proper organization you can really get a good show from amateurs. : McKie has high praise for her cast, many of them wellâ€"known to Kâ€"W Little Theatre audiâ€" ences. They include Marijan Mehes, lain Wright, Robb Judd, Angie Rohrbacher, Becky Tomasevic, Christopher Ball and Alexandra McGovern. "All these people are good, and since most of them are doing the kinds of parts they‘ve never done before, they‘re really having fun. And audiences are going to have fun with them." Although written by an Englishman, David Freeman, and involving "a lot of bouncing in and out of doors," McKie says she wouldn‘t describe A Bedfull Of Foreigners as "your typical British farce." ‘"It‘s more a situation comedy, extremely tightly written and the characters are very nicely balanced. The atmosphere is more Bavarian really. It pretends to be sort of sexy, of course, but it‘s one of the more wholesome things."‘ As the show‘s director, she says her main job during the last six weeks or so of rehearsals has been "to edit and shape the performers‘ own kind of offâ€"theâ€"wall imaginations." There‘s a special benefit performance for the Cerebral Palsy Foundation tomorrow night (April 28), with regular public performances at Kitchener‘s Victoria Park Pavilion this Friday and Saturday nights (April 29 and 30) and again nightly next Thursday through Saturday (May 5â€"7). Performances begin at 8 o‘clock.
