The kids just keep coming out for BCI‘s bowling day Alley allies It may be "cool," especially with younger generations, to be married to life in the fast lane. But for the past five years. a group of Bluevale collegiate stuâ€" dents have preferred life in the ‘"friendly" lanes. Bowling lanes, to be precise. Rick Campbell Chronicle Staff Under the direction of BCI teachâ€" er Mr. Jim Fox, the youngsters head out once a week for eight weeks during winter session for an hour or so of after school fun â€" and while the sport may seem somewhat laidback for some, these kids are far from bored with the extra hour of social fun. "It‘s a really good afternoon out, you‘re only here for an hour, and the whole idea is to come out, enjoy yourself and have fun," said grade 12 student Debbie Geisel, a fourâ€" year veteran of the program. ‘"There are some good bowlers, but mostly it‘s just a lot of people out for a good time." And when Geisel says a lot of people, she isn‘t exaggerating. The program, held eight consecutive Tuesdays from early January to March, has drawn as many as 90 bowlers, crowding the upper and lower level Howard Totzke‘s Waterâ€" loo Bowling Lanes. â€" This year, because of more‘stuâ€" dents working and added BCI varâ€" sity sports, the program has only 52 bowlers, but the squeals, groans, joking and banter are as evident as ever. As Cathy Munro bowis over the pins, she gets cheers of support from her Corner Pin teammates (iâ€"r) Chris Roenspiess, Margot McKerlie and Leslie Neff. ‘*Some of these people will never, ever be good bowlers, but that‘s not the point anyway," said Geisel. **You just come out, meet people you maybe wouldn‘t have a chance to (meet) at school, and have a really good time."‘ Some teams sport familiar names such as Gutter Balls and Corner Pins but some mysterious appellaâ€" tions such as Sons of Stein, Chico and the Gang and others creep in also. Captains such as Geisel, who heads the Fabulous Four, are in charge of names, scoring and reâ€" placements when needed. According to Fox, the first week of the program is devoted to pracâ€" tice and handicapping teams. Then for four weeks the regular season gets underway and the last three weeks of playoffs see a further divisional realignment to pit teams of equal calibre against each other. Though champions are declared, prizes are awarded for such things as low score, pins over average and so on so no one is ruled out of the running. "It hasn‘t been bad weatherâ€"wise this year, but last year even when it was so cold, kids would trudge down here through a foot and a half of snow to bowl. It‘s the social atmoâ€" sphere, I guess." "I keep asking myself why the kids keep supporting this program so well." said Fox during windâ€"up day last Tuesday. ‘"They have to pay for their games, arrange their own transportation, and help orgaâ€" nize the activity. Yet they continue to come out in large numbers. Brad Schaefer disâ€" plays balletâ€"like form as he delivers a ball during BCI bowling playoffs.
