PAGE 14 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9, 1983 American actress Linda Hunt is incredible in the latter role, completely convincing as a male and emotionally devastating as the poetical narrator for most of the picture. Without A Trace is a powerful and allâ€"tooâ€"topical , drama that in the last five minutes or so entirely throws In recent reviews, I‘ve expounded on the exceptional dramatic artistry of Gandhi; the classy comic delights of Tootsie, My Favorite Year and Victorâ€"Victoria (my order of preference as the top comedies of 1982); the classic entertainment qualities of E.T. The Extraâ€"Terâ€" restrial; the admirable povelâ€"toâ€"screen transition of Sophie‘s Choice, and the enjoyable â€" but really quite ordinary â€" melodrama of The Verdict. Just to prove "it ain‘t necessarily so," among the 18 different pictures currently playing at Kâ€"W and Camâ€" bridge indoor theatres, I‘d rate 11 between good and great, three as fair and only one a complete dud. (Three I haven‘t seen, so I won‘t pass any judgements on those.) Victor Stanton Chronicle Special Movie reviewers frequently get a reputation for not liking most movies they see. â€" Among them, these seven movies have amassed nearly ) Academy Award nominations, in most cases deâ€" servedly so, although 1 consider The Verdict, and especially Paul Newman‘s performance in it, much overâ€"rated . 1I‘d also place Independence Day, The Year Of Living Dangerously and Without A Trace, in that order, at the top of the ~good" scale, with the Canadianâ€"produced By Design also meriting that rating but on a more qualified basis. (Also good is Peter Pan, the 30â€"yearâ€"old Disney animated version of James Barrie‘s classic children‘s tale.) Independence Day works well on several levels, but earns its highest praise for its realistic treatment of wifeâ€"abuse. 1 can‘t, offâ€"hand, recall another movie in recent years which has explored this area of domestic vr olence. There are, however, many things within this picture that are basically cliches, including the mainâ€"story romance between a waitress anxious to get out of her small home town and the local hotâ€"rod champion who doesn‘t share her bigâ€"city aspirations. Kathleen Quinlan and David Keith are both appealing and believeable in those roles, but it‘s stage actress Dianne Wiest in her screen debut as the submissive and illâ€"used young wife who injects this film with such chilling realism. The Year Of Living Dangerously blends romance in an exotic land with an historical revolution. Set in 1965 Indonesia, the story‘s principal focus may be on the relationship that develops between a neophyte broadcast journalist from â€" Australia and a British embassy employee who seemingly is a spy. But it is the catalytic character of a dwarf Chineseâ€"Australian cameraman who lifts the film well above the routine.
