For 20 years, producerâ€"director Richard Attenborough has wanted to make a movie based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the little man who paved the way for India‘s indepenâ€" dence and who inspired millions to adopt nonâ€"violent means of fighting unjust laws. The realization of this dream is a threeâ€"hourâ€" long screen epic that retains the intimacy of a personal drama. Remarkable in its fidelity to Gandhi‘s selfâ€"stated assertion that his life was his message, this picture doesn‘t try to overâ€" whelm its audiences either with spectacle or with the kind of unqualified idolatry that frequently has characterized movie biograâ€" phies.
