John McVicar, chairman of the Kâ€"W Blood Donor Committee, a division of the Kâ€"W Red Cross presented a Certificate of Appreciaâ€" tion in recognition of the students‘ generous contributions to the blood donor program in the past 17 years. ‘‘"We wanted to publicly acknowlâ€" edge the relationship between the University of Waterloo and the community with respect to the blood donor program," said McVicar. They have organized competiâ€" tions, issued challenges, awarded trophies â€" and Monday University of Waterloo students were recognized as champions. And lest the students be content to simply rest on their laurels, McViâ€" car challenged them to contribute even more in 1983. As he spoke, students were already forming a line near the entrance to St. Jérome College auditorium to donate at Monday‘s campus blood donor clinâ€" ic. Chronicle Staff Blood donor clinics which have been held at the university since 1966 have always been successful and have inspired healthy competiâ€" tion between student groups, faculâ€" ties and residences to increase their contributions. As many as 400 units of blood have been collected at Pat Arbuckle The Kâ€"W area is noted for its active support of the blood donor program, said McVicar, and a large proportion of the blood donated in the area comes from Waterloo‘s student population, a contribution that has long been overlooked. And student contributions are expected to make up 30 per cent of the total blood collected in Kitchentrâ€"Waterloo in the coming year. The active participation of stuâ€" dents in the blood donor program is a trend the Kâ€"W Blood Donor Committee hopes to encourage since it may prove crucial to the future of the program. McVicar explained that the major contributors of blood in Canada today are those between the ages of 20 to 40 while the major users of that blood are over 50 years. As long as the 20 to 40 age group is comprised of members of the postâ€"war baby boom, the Red Cross will have no problem ensuring adequate supply, he said. ‘"*We have been promoting blood contributions at the student level for the last three to four years," said McVicar. ‘"We want to give students the habit of giving blood before they get out in the real world." But as the population ages and these people become the major users of the blood there could be serious supply shortages. The Red Cross is hoping to maintain an adequate supply by acting now. In presenting the certificate of appreciation, McVicar commended UW students "for the tremendous effort for the last 17 years. I hope this relationship will continue." Future plans indicate an even greater involvement by the students in the blood donor program. Nine clinics will be held during the 1982â€"83 academic year, three per term, with a new annual goal of 3,000 units up from last year‘s target 2,000 units. UW students were honored Monday for their generous and continued support of the Kâ€"W Red Cross. Students contribute 1,000 pints or more of blood during each of the nine blood donor clinics held at the campus each year.
