Holly â€" Fair reaps funds ‘The Hélly Fair conâ€" vened by the United Church Women of First United Church was a tremendously successâ€" ful event, yielding a profit of $6,000. With this amount, and the sacrificial givâ€" ings which totalled $5,000, the UCW was able to give $6,500 to the Mission and Serâ€" vice Dept. of the United Church; furthermore, about $4,000 was used throughout the year in support of the church and community projâ€" The annual meeting and pot luck dinner for the UCW was held prior to Christmas with Joyce Rankin as past president and Nominâ€" ating Chairman. The president for 1983 will be Barbara Whitney, vice president and proâ€" gram chairman Ruth Ann Watty, recording secretary Wendy Mclintyre, correspondâ€" ing secretary Lois Steâ€" vens and treasurer Pauline Harper. Other executive positions were also filled and the executive was installed during the service Janâ€" uary 9. Unit IV was responsâ€" ible for the program which was a slide preâ€" sentation and report from Norma Sorensen. A nurse at St. Mary‘s hospital, Sorensen reâ€" ported on her trip to Nicaragua last Janâ€" uary with the Medical Groups Mission, a team of 72 Canadian and American nurses, optometrists and spouses whose purpose it was to provide eye treatment for the Niâ€" caraguans. _ _ During eight and a half working days, 9,019 patients were seen, 6,460 pair of glasses were distributâ€" ed and 169 eye operaâ€" tions were performed. These glasses had been donated by the public and packed before the team left for Nicaraâ€" gua. More than 1,500 pair of glasses were donated by First Unitâ€" ed Church and many more pair of glasses and used suitcases, which are used to carry theglas&areneeded for two trips to Niâ€" caragua in 1983, both this month and later in June. Donations of these items would be gratefully received at First United Church, King and William Streets, Waterloo.
