As a high school student at Fort William. colle- giate, Thunder Bay. he came first in the 1981 Canadian Mathematics Olympiad. a mathema- tics competition for the best high school stu- dents in the country. He also twice finished in second place in the UW-run Descartes mathematics competi» tion. Highlight of the UW teath's performance was the standing of its leading member, David Ash. He was among the top five stu- dents; for this he has been named a Putnam fellow and will receive a $500 cash award. The UW team fin- ished in eighth place this year; it was in competition with 342 other teams from such distinguished universi ties as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford. Michigan. Illinois, Cal- tech, and so on. The competition is an annual one involving a six-hour exam; it is written by more than 2.000 of the most out- standing math students on the continent. For the seventh time m the past nine years a team of mathematics students at the Univer sity of Waterloo has finished in the top 10 in the annual William Lowell Putnam Mather matical Competition.
