Master of ceremonies Gary Boug of Preston high school was correct in stating Friday night that the Mike Moser Memorial Award "‘need not necessarily be given out" each year. Cameron Heights star David Kipfter was honored Friday night at his school during haiftime of the Waterioo County aliâ€"star high school basketbail game when he was named 1981â€"82 recipient of the Mike Moser Memorial award. But everyone in the crowd of 900 at the hothouse Cameron Heights gym knew it would be, and also knew to whom it would be. Kipfer wins Moser award to the profile of Moser, lauded by Kipfer as "probably the best ever from this city." The award was donated several years ago by County officials in memory of Moser, a TWwin City allâ€"star in high school who went on to carve out an exemplary career with University of Waterloo Warâ€" riors before his sudden passing in January of 1975. Last year‘s Moser winner, Peter Savich of Preston, now toils with Moser‘s former club at UW . Fittingly, Kipfer received the award from Mike‘s father George Moser at haiftime of Friday‘s Waterioo County allâ€"star classic at Cameron Heights, a contest Kipfer led all scorers in with 22. Titans fall just short "I think the story is no matter who we reâ€" placed Dan with, you‘re replacing a member of your start ing five and that means about a week or two week â€" adjustment for the other players too, sometimes it takes up to half a year," admit ted Visser. ‘"That‘s not to take anything away from a guy like Webes (John Weber) who did a really good job for us. Militating against the Titans in the final were injuries to key personnel. Outstanding playmaker and scorer Dan Berry was lost for the year the eve of the Ontario intermediate championships with torn cartilage in his knee and that fact, said Visser, could not be overlooked in Titans demise. Over 50% of their defeats came after Berry‘s injury. "I could never say anything bad about this team, we were all genâ€" uinely disappointed that we lost, but no question every one of our players tried 100% all the time, I was really pleased with the effort," said Visser. . 1t was a sad ending to an enormously suecâ€" cessful year that saw Titans compile a 33â€"7 record, but all things considered, playing coach Mike Visser termed the year a great success. They gave it the ol‘ college try, but KW Mr. Stereo Titans feli just short last week in their attempt to capâ€" ture the Etobicoke Reâ€" creational Basketball League championship. Playing outstanding ball despite a crucial injury situation, Titans battled toothâ€"andâ€"nail with Toronto Drifters but lost the second game of the bestâ€"ofâ€" three finals 81â€"75 and thus were eliminated. Titans, who played the entire season with out the benefit of one home game, are hoping to resurrect the West ern Ontario Basketball League for next sea son, but should that not eventuate they would once Again return to the Etobicoke loop. Ted Darcie had 20 points and Ron Gra ham 17 for Drifters. According to Visser, Drifters played supeâ€" rbly and exploited Titans lack of depth by denying Kieswetter the ball in the Mr. Stereo end, which forced players like Visser to come back up court to handle the bail. That in turn negated much of the scoring punch of the Kâ€"W club as the high scoring Visser was restricted to 11 points. Steve Garreit had 15 and Brian Ray 12 while Kieswetter led all Titans with 18. but we just didn‘t get that flow going, I dunno, we were a bit herky jerky, just not quite right. It‘s not anyone‘s fault." ‘‘Steve gave us one of the most courageous performances I‘ve ever seen," said Visser, exâ€" plaining that the former KCI grad dressed to take some momentary pressure off stellar guard Tom Kieswetter, who was forced to practically "go it alone" in Titans bail handling departâ€" ment. ‘"He (Forden) took passes with one hand, dribbled with one hand, had to do everyâ€" thing with his one hand, and don‘t think they (Drifters}) werent‘ trying to take advanâ€" gage of the situation either, they were all over him. He had a type of playing cast on, but still it must have been so difficult for him, I can‘t say enough about his effort." Steye Forden, who played in spots despite a painfully broken bone in his hand. Weber himself was suffering from a bad back in the final, and Visser praised both his effort, and especially the effort of guard
