With a corporate commitment to the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) to underwrite the tourney to the tune of $25,000, Miracle (MFM) is taking the first in what could be many steps to create a greater liaison within the community. At a news conference Monday at the Aud to unveil plans for the eightâ€"team tourney which gets unâ€" derway Dec. 26 and concludes with the goldâ€"medal game Tuesday, Dec. 29, Orillia Miracle Food Mart store manager Ray Busby deâ€" scribed the original concept. ‘"We (MFM) decided that we should be involved with something along these lines," said Busby, an Oakville native and long time coach and official with the OHA. "In our discussions with our director of public relations it was decided we should check out hockey. "I knew (OHA president) Brent (Ladds) so I asked him what he thought we could come up with, and we came up with the idea of a B tourney, there‘s really nothing else for Junior B, and we thought an event like this would build interest in the communities we serve." "We‘ve always done a lot of things locally, and this (tourney) adds to it," said Wilkinson. ‘"We hope to help Junior B hockey not only locally but across the provâ€" ince." In staging the tournament, the OHA and Miracle are hoping to raise sufficient funds to provide this year‘s provincial Junior B champion with sufficient funds to go on a tour of Europe next August at no cost to the club. Over 200 of the best Junior B players from the five leagues will be showcased and officials are hoping to make it an annual event.
