These are to be held, November through January, in 30 cities across Canada. All young musicians resident in Canada who study an orchestral instrument are invited to particiâ€" Internationallyâ€"recognized as a pioneer in orchestra training techâ€" niques, Canada‘s National Youth Orchestra has been in operation since 1960. Its graduates are to be found in every Canadian symphony orchestra and in most of the major musical centres around the world. Age eligibility for participation in the NYO varies with each instruâ€" ment. Details are forwarded with the application form. However, all musicians between the ages of 10 and 28 may apply for a free audition. An NYO audition is not a competiâ€" tion â€" it stands alone as a valid learning experience. Its main purâ€" poses are to stimulate interest in the orchestral music profession and to instruct. The increasing accessibility of good private teaching across Canâ€" ada ensures that more musicians qualify for the NYO today than could possibly be admitted to the program. Where applicants are of equal merit, often for different musical reasons, consideration is given to their development and talent in relation to age, the scarcity of other orchestral training in their _Orchestra invites youth to apply area, and their potential for becomâ€" ing professional orchestral musiâ€" clans. But the essential criterion for awarding places remains excelâ€" lence in performance. There are no academic qualifications required. Participants in the NYO have come from all regions of the country. Many young professionals, even from the major symphony orchestras, are attracted to the study program. They work sideâ€"byâ€" side with the most talented students, some of whom will be playing in aâ€" large orchestra for the first time in their lives. Each NYO student is awarded a full scholarship, up to the value of $5,000 which covers all the sumâ€" mer‘s expenses, including intensive study with the international faculâ€" ty. In addition, in 1981, the NYO formed a second orchestra for which a fee, competitive with other organizations‘ fees, was charged. This second orchestra, known as the Symphonia Animata, will be continâ€" ued in 1982, giving more musicians an opportunity to take advantage of the training program. Audition applications must be submitted by October 31 and are available, with further details, from the National Youth Orchestra> of Canada, 76 Charles Street W, Toronâ€" to, Ontario M5S 1K8, telephone (416) 922â€"5031. ; HOW THE OTHER HALF LOVESq a comedy by Alan Ayckbourn Tickets "TRY OUR SOFT ICEâ€"CREAM® C â€" NOW IN OUR EIGHTH YEAR â€" 478â€"A Albert St. N. â€" Next to Zehrs _ Victoria Park Pavilion 8 p.m. kets (yC WHSMITH â€" or _ call 886â€"0660 senior/ student $4.
