By Stan Clerk. Premier Bill Davis has travelled Ontario from one end to the other - 16,000 miles by air and 10,000 miles by bus - in his third consecutive try for an elusive majority. The Con- servatives lost their majority posi- tion in 1975 and failed to regain it in Davis was in the area on Satur- day. He made a campaign stop at Kitchener's Holiday Inn and paused briefly to sign the guest- book at Waterloo City hall before going on to Brantford. According to a tour spokesman, Davis' schedule is not set for today, "We're flexible. The leader is starting in Thunder Bay and fin- ishing in Toronto, but we don't know about in between." The spokesman said there are "few places the leader hasn't been. The aim is to meet as many per- sons as possible, and there really is no master plan." "it's bden a very busy cam- paign,'rhe added. - A - Stuart Smith was also here on the weekend. He attended a rally at Bingeman Park on Sunday and con- tinued on to Toronto. Michael Cassidy was in t/his area early in the six-week campaign but has not returned since. Meanwhile in Waterloo North riding. one campaign manager is confident.another is cautious, and one is perhaps just being realistic. Keith Rae. campaign manager for incumbent Liberal Herb Epp, PEI"! We've had a wonderful re- sponse canvassing, and he (Eppl has done about 25 polls himself." He said local Liberals are quite confident Epp will retain the Wa- terloo North seat, Rae said Epp tiasanocked on doors in Waterloo, Elmira, Breslau, and Wellesley village. Local Liberals attracted 400 peo- ple to Bingeman Park on Sunday. Rae said, while only 200 showed up at the Holiday Inn for Premier Davis on Saturday. Brian Turnbull, eo-chairman of Conservative Bob Labbett's cam- paign. said his man might win, “but if we beat him (Eppl it won't be by a landslide." . “The best we can hope for is a small margin," Turnbull said. _ He said local _Tories are hoping for a "Davis swing" to help their campaign, and Labbett workers are running a “high profile" cam- paign. Labbett is not as well known in the area as (Kitchener candidates, Morley Rosenberg and At Barron, Tumbull said, and this may hurt the Waterloo candidate, who non- etheless remains hopeful. Turnbull claimed that disen- chanted NDP supporters in Wa- terloo North may vote Comrerva- tive in this election. NDP campaign manager Neil Jensen said flatly his party is not 'going to win in Waterloo North. “We are not going to win _.. I think we'll increase our vote this time. however. We can use the increased support in the next election." he said. However, Jensen said that Bob Needham is the best of the three candidates. "He's donated a lot of extra time to9nocking on doors in this elec- tion." C EYBOARDS on Wednesday, A1Pril l for members and hurs- lay.
