Hahns have Action was fast and furious in front of New Hamburg goalie Don Einwechter during Sunday‘s first period against Waterloo Siskins. Above Einwechter had to take temporary leave of the crease area as Siskin Jeff Bender was hammered into Einwechter. By Rick Campbeli Chronicle Sports Editor The highâ€"flying Waterloo Siskins were grounded in a pair of games last weekend and coach Jack Egers figures it might have something to do with his club‘s lengthy passenger list. A man capable of few or many words depending on his mood, Egers was both Sunday night after Siskins escaped with a 6â€"6 homeâ€"ice overtime draw against a vastlyâ€"improved New Hamburg Hahn club. ~We;tu;ll-(° ;aâ€"ldEâ€"gevrvs with no visible attempt to pad his statement with qualifying adjectives. We just gave them (Hahns) that point tonight, it was a very valuable one to lose, 106. While Egers was basically right on in his assessment of Waâ€" terloo‘s effort, there is no denying Hahns are a rejuvenated lot under new head coach Mike Wright and assistants who have their charges playing to their capabilities in a sound, disciplined manner. In fact, were it not for eyeâ€"popping saves by Siskin netâ€" minder Jeff Nickel in overtime, especially on Mark Maue in the dying seconds, Siskins would have left the ice losers rather than with the draw. By gaining only one of the possible four points in the two games, Siskins now find themselves tied for first with Culliâ€" The weekend didn‘t start out well for Waterloo either, as they were on the short end of a 3â€"2 overtime decision to Stratâ€" ford Cullitons. Egers fuming as Siskins outhustled by New Hamburg tons in the Midwestern Junior B. each with 34 points "I tell you there‘s no way you‘re going to win hockey games when four or five guys are playing their guts out and 10 others are just out there floating." said Egers. "I can‘t figure out what‘s happening, all I know is it‘s going to take a lot of soulâ€" searching on our part to turn things around. If it means getâ€" ting some new bodies in there, then that‘s what we‘ll do. We want guys who are going to put out 100% out there."‘ It took no great sage to figure out who Egers credited with ‘‘playing their guts out" Sunday. Captain Brad King was again superb with one goal and two assists to win the Mcâ€" Donald‘s MVP award as Siskin player of the game on Kid‘s Night. But on this occasion, King, the player of the month for November, was at least equalled by centreman Jeff Bender who tallied a goal and two assists but also contributed a tireless effort forechecking Hahns in the offensive zone. Seâ€" veral others, including defenseman Shawn Mulroney and goaltender Nickel who saved his club‘s bacon on a handful of occasions after replacing John Conrad early in the third, also submitted praiseworthy efforts, but overâ€"all far too many went the freeâ€"ride route. "I can‘t believe some of the mistakes we made out there, you teach them one thing in practice, they seem to underâ€" stand, then come out here and do exactly the opposite,"" said a fuming Egers. ‘‘And we took some of the stupidest penalties at the stupidest times...‘‘ Siskin Paul Berberich (10) wasn‘t using this New Hamburg defenceman as a fire hydrant, the Waterloo player was merely lifting his leg Sunday with hopes that the screen shot from the point would find its mark behind Hahn goalie Don Einwechter. That it didn‘t, as the shot just went wide of the left post. The two teams played to a 6â€"6 overtime draw. WATERLOO CHRQNICLE Although outshooting Hahns 22â€"12 in the first, the teams came out of the period with a 1â€"1 draw as both Conrad and youngster Don Einwechter for New Hamburg were sharp. Bender and Dean Bell exchanged markers. Mulroney was the key figure in the second as he tallied three times, including twice in less than a minute late in the period as Waterloo assumed a 5â€"2 lead. . _ Siskins got in referee Ray Parise‘s bad books late in the period though and the carryover to the third resulted in New Hamburg scoring three times in the fixjst_ two minutes to tie. King, with his second of the game at 4:41 put Waterloo in the lead 6â€"5, but a blatant giveaway by Siskins midway through the period allowed Jeff Brick to cash in for the 6â€"6 draw. Hahns, who never met Siskins during the New Hamburg club‘s dreadful slide that led to the resignation of coach Ken Leu, gradually took over the game in the third period with clean, solid bodychecking and aggressive play that more than turned the momentum in their favor. Neither team found the range again though despite a gaggle of golden opportunities, especially in overtime. In Stratford Friday, secondâ€"period goals by King and Mike Coppolino gave Waterloo a 2â€"2 tie heading into the third, which proved scoreless. Dean Williams got the winner three minutes into the overtime session. _ Siskins travel to Cambridge Friday and then get a chance for revenge when Stratford comes for a vist Sunday to Waâ€" terloo Arena.
