Ozolins great pianist but Schumann stole the show Choir performs The â€" Kitchenerâ€"Waâ€" terloo _ Philharmonic Choir, under the direcâ€" tion of Howard Dyck, will present the first in its fiftyâ€"ninth season, three concert series this weekend. ‘A Festival of Christmas Carols‘ takes place at St. Peter‘s Lutheran Church, 49 Queen St., North in Kitchener on Friday and Saturday Dec. 12 and 13. It seems Ozolins‘ arâ€" tistry surpasses that of Willan the composer and consequently, like a great actor stuck with a mediocre script, he was never able to truly deâ€" monstrate the formidale talent he‘s becoming inâ€" creasingly noted for worldâ€"wide. This is not to overly disparage Willan, who remains one of the more notable Canadian comâ€" posers. "It‘s a bit oldâ€" fashioned. It‘s very roâ€" mantic,‘" Ozolins said of the Willan concerto after his performance. Indeed it is, and a very nice piece of music contâ€" rived by a very good composer â€" but not a great master. Willan‘s piano concerâ€" to â€" not as much as his famed choral works â€" lacks a unique definition and inspired theme that stands out. True, as Ozolins said, there are many themes throughout the concerto, but as he added ‘"perâ€" haps too many."‘ As well, the perforâ€" mance suffered through Of Latvian parents, Ozolins was born in Gerâ€" many but has lived most of his life in Canada. He is indeed a prodigious taâ€" lent, with impeccable technical skills and a flair for the appropriate dramatic nuances as well. However, the problem facing Ozolins was that he was limited to perâ€" forming one piece, the C Minor Piano Concerto by Canadian composer Healey Willan. The orchestra had preâ€" viously tackled Mozart‘s symphony No.38, The Prague, not much to the credit of Wolfgang Amaâ€" deus. I must admit off the bat that much of Moâ€" zart‘s music doesn‘t exâ€" cite me, it being too One only wishes the program had been arâ€" ranged to allow another work as well, perhaps even a solo piece. The reason it seemed Schumann stole the spotâ€" light from Ozolins is that his Symphony No.4 in D minor provided the high point of the evening, what with the composiâ€" tion‘s superior and marked contrast to Wilâ€" lan‘s and the orchestra‘s dynamic handling of it. a lack of coâ€"ordination with the orchestra, perâ€" haps due to some unâ€" familiarity and limited rehearsal time. Nonetheless, the Wilâ€" lan concerto was enough to impress that Ozolins is an artist to be reckâ€" oned with, one who plays with great clarity, thoughtfuilness and conâ€" trol. NTERTAINMENT For the sake of a contâ€" rived dynamism, a lackâ€" lustre performance enâ€" sued that missed the easy grace of Mozart, graceful even inthis punchy third movement Conductor Raffi Arâ€" menian is a musicianâ€" who likes depth and drama and perhaps Moâ€" zart‘s lack of passion in this symphony caused him to compensate by trying too hard. There‘s not much to quibble about in the orâ€" chestra‘s handling of the first two movements of the Prague, but the third, the Presto, should cap the experience and, in this, the orchestra failed to deliver. The presto became more of a "prestissimo‘‘ and many of the 32nd and 64ths fromthe vio lins blended into an incoâ€" herent mass with the consequent speed. On the other hand, if one is to do Mozart, they might as well do him right. pleasant for my taste, as though it were 18th cenâ€" truy Muzak. So, there is some bias here. But then, all was reâ€" deemed with the Schoâ€" mann. Armenian _ showed himself to be the basiâ€" cally brilliant conductor he is, building tension upon tension to the very end and providing a unâ€" ique sense of the climacâ€" tic to this Schumann symphony . _It was by far the most enjoyable presentation of the evening. All the orchestra members seemed to enjoy this concluding piece, played with great enthusiasm andthe right measure of intensity. It was so well executâ€" ed as a matter of fact that even the notable disturbances coming from â€" the _ timpany player‘s performance were easily cast aside. of the Prague Armenian confessed after the performance that he had asked the timpanist to hold back somewhat and produce Daily luncheon specials at each location BANQUET FACILITIES AND CATERING FOR VARIED OCCASIONS ‘"Angie‘s â€" where good food is a tradition" St. Agatha Waterioo 75 ERB RD. â€" 886â€"6250 47 ERB ST.
