RIGHT WINGER Todd Francis of Waterioo Siskins (1§) triggers a quick shot from the slot against Kitchener Ranger B‘s Friday at McCormick Arena but the puck narrowly missed the post and went wide. Rangers won this contest 5â€"3 but Siskins grabbed an 8â€"7 overtime win in Elmira Sunday to give them momentum heading into Friday‘s league opener in New Hamburg. *‘*Besides, we shouldn‘t have to worry: about the other teams, we‘re the leaâ€" gue champs, they should be worried about us,"" said Egers after practice Monâ€" day, not at all arrogantly but merely matterâ€"ofâ€"factly. ‘*You don‘t think in the past few years that Stratford was worrying about what the other teams had, did you? By Rick Campbell Chronicle Sports Editor Waterloo Siskin coach Jack Egers isn‘t worried right now about the strength of hiscompetition as the Midwwestern Ontario Junâ€" ior B hockey league sets to launch its 1980â€"81 campaign. He‘d rather concentrate on preparing his own troops for Friday‘s opener in New Hamburg. Waterloo‘s home season starts Sunday at 7:30 p.m. against Cambridge. Waterloo didn‘t exactly set the league on fire in five exhibitions, losing all three to a big strong Kitchener Club and winning a pair over Elmira, including an 8â€"7 overtime decision Sunday night. Egers hastily disâ€" missed the results of those ‘"With the large number of players we had in camp, we just haven‘t had the opporâ€" tunity to work on any of our systems, like coming out of our end, penalty killing or powerplays. We just threw the kids out on the ice on a regular rotation. And judging from the quaâ€" lity of players inked by Sisâ€" kins as of Tuesday mornifig. no one need feel pangs of pity for the personnel losses suffered by the Waterloo club from last year. ‘‘But then again, we‘ve geared our practices all this week to be ready for our opening game. With the reâ€" turnees on our club and the talent shown by the new kids, I don‘t foresee them having any problems pickâ€" Siskins ready to play for keeps from now on League opener Friday in New Hamburg ing up our systems quickâ€" ly." A quick runâ€"down of the 17 players signed so far indicaâ€" tes what Siskins lack in size they will more than make up for in speed and offensive ability. ‘*We‘ll have a sound offenâ€" sive club, I‘ve no worries we can put the puck in the net,"‘ said Egers. ‘"What we‘ll be working on mostly this week is our defensive play, and by that I just don‘t mean defenâ€" semen, I mean the forwards coming back to help out." After a hotlyâ€"contested battle between the pipes in preâ€"season the goaltending tandem to start the season will be made up of returnee John Conrad and Waterloo major midget product Al Hebert, who was signed to a minor card. ‘*Yes that‘s who we‘ll start with in goal, but that‘s not necessarily to say those will be the two that will be around at the end of the seaâ€" son," said Egers. ‘‘*Hebert made the best showing of all goalies in camp, he was very, very imâ€" pressive, and while John had an average camp, I know from last year what he can do." Calder‘s physical presenâ€" ce plus ability to move the puck out of his zone makes him a valuable asset, and Egers will be looking for the same style from former Belleville pointman Brian On defensge, Egers has stated from day one he deâ€" sires a crunching element and apparently should get that with Bellevillie transfer Shawn Mulroney, returnee Todd Loveday and juvenile product Paul Mcintyre â€" to say nothing of the added bonus of having Eric Calder, who along with forward Roy Russell returned from Cornâ€" wall of the Quebec Major Junior League. Up the middle Siskins apâ€" pear to have a glut of offenâ€" sive skill with returneeS Brad Lund, Brad King, Lisâ€" towel transfer Jeff Bender and rookie Duanne Moeser. King, one of the club‘s most versatile individuals, also plays the point on powerâ€" plays and can help out on the blueline anytime in a pinch. ‘‘Having Eric back really shores up our defense on the right side. Now if we could just get Tommy Abbott to come back ...‘ said Egers, echoing his sentiments of one week ago. Left wing slots will be filled by Mike Coppolino, Paul Dahmer, who excelled late last year, Russell, who can play either left or right side as well as kill penalties, Chris Young and newcomer Fred McEachnie from the Arthur Junior C club. fore the game. Russell, as well as Bobby Hague and Tim Fedy, who set a torrid goalscoring pace in midget last year, will stack the right side along with other possible comâ€" binations.â€" Egers indicated Monday there conceivably could be more signings beâ€" ~â€" Notes: Siskins donated their share of the 50â€"50 draws from last week‘s two home games, plus their gate receipts to the Terry Fox Cancer Research fund. Sunâ€" day president Darcy Miller made a cheque presentation for $236 to volunteers Barb Urquhart and Lilli Wessel at McDonald‘s Restaurant at King and Columbia. That total also included expen‘ses donated graciously by the City of Waterloo for the two home games ... Explaining his return from Cornwall Sunday, Siskin Roy Russell said, "they treated us well down there (Cornwall), it was a super organization, we (he and Eric Calder) just didn‘t feel it was the right New Hamburg time, we weren‘t having a good time. They told us anyâ€" time we feel ready to come back, they‘d love to have us At the Kâ€"W Hospital, on Sunday, Sept. 21. 1980. William Oehm of 198 King St. N., Waterloo, aged 81 years.
