Due to a lack of players, the North Waterloo Kwikie Minit Markets were forced to cease operations two weeks ago and at an emergency meeting last Wednesday, Team Sports, which plays out of the Waterloo City League, was admitted. What the move boils down to is the league and Team ’orts doing each other favors. "They (IFL) wanted to keep a balanced eight-team league and were aware of our team so they asked us to consider joining," said Team Sport sponsor-manager Joe Siopiolosz. "I left it totally up to the boys and they accepted it unani- mously. We sat down and discussed it at our tourney in Port Elgin last week and said we'd do it." So in effect by assuming the North Waterloo franchise. record (1-6) and schedule, the Team Sport club has bailed out the IFT, from a pool of administrative headaches - but not without reward. “Our kids have always said they'd like better competition and now they'll get it," said Siopiolosz. "The experience we'11 get will be invaluable also." Actually Team Sports has been anxious to join the league for quite a while, but saw few avenues to gain entrance. "The ‘big thing in starting up a team is the parks and CHYM'rs have the one in Waterloo. It would be hard to operate two teams out of Waterloo and expect the people to support both. Then the North Waterloo people put together a team last year and we didn't want to just step in and bounce me other team out." fi? carry the franchise take-over one further, Team Sports ill continue to play its home games Tuesdays at the Brid- geport Rod and Gun Club diamond and Fridays in St. Cle- ments, the same parks North Waterloo was scheduled to Dave Brow use Siopiolosz does not foresee any problem attracting a nucleus of fans. A "On our team right now we've got six guys from rural junior teams and we also have three open cards which we'll likely use to sign former North Waterloo players. My major concern now is to set up an executive and get helpers to work gates and so on.“ . .. -sripGiiizairnitted to being somewhat surprised by Team Sports record in City League play where they have lost se- By Rick Gumball Gimmick Sports qditor There is a new kid on the block in the Inter-City Fastball Beth performs minor Team Sports joins IFL Grt um! w." in qcav Take a walk " Bantam 'th ' Hr- . b.,, - w.- bl Our active program includes swimming, crafts, sports, creative movement 8- special events a. presentations, Plus weekly trips to such exciting places as the Science Centre. "I'm not knocking the City League, there are some good teams and excellent players, but the kids just don't seem to get up for that calibre. The only teams they really get up for are Kent Hotel and the (Waterloo Regional) Police. We play much better in tournaments." A graphic illustration of that1point came in Port 'Elgin where Team Sports carted off third place in a predominant- ly senior tournamtnt with, a fl record.____ _ -- _ - _ "We've got really good pitchers in Whitey (Mark Lob- singer) and Dave Dautner. Dave broke his thumb three weeks ago in a tourney in Bloomingdale but he says he's ready for this weekend (junior eliminations in Grimsby last weekend). "And our hitters will adjust. We've got several who could be playing with CHYM'rs, like Steve Uberig. Danny Strauss and Dana Saunders, who still has another year of junior after this year. And our catcher (Bob Fleming) is just out of midget and batted .500 in the Port Elgin tournament." Siopiolosz said his team's main goal for the season was last weekend's eliminations, where the previous two years they have had 2-2 records, but that they plan to make a run in both the City League and the IFL. He is hoping to have some City league games chanced to the tour-point format to avoid some schedule conflicts. Counting both leagues, the Team Sport boss figures his club will be playing about 35 more regular season games, plus tournaments. __ A - _ "That's all up to (City League president) Dennis (Dos- man) right now. He's aware of our situation and will tell us soon if any changes will be made," said Siopiolo§2. _ - It ghould be very interesting Thursday when the Waterloo Team Sport Juniors make their initial appearance in the in- ter-City Fastball League. Ne Their entry the IFL is not looked upon as a temporary stop-gap measure either as Siopiolosz said the club will con- tinue to operate in the leaque as a junior entry in years to come. "We've really got a wide area to draw players from, there's not that many junior clubs around here, and we'll continue as a junior club in the (IFL) league unless we real- ly run short of players. I don't foresee that happening though."
