I am not a soccer fan. Hands in the air, I admit it. Blame my upbringing, my hockeyâ€"loving father, my â€"mindedness, or the North American society, if you to go that far. ‘ occer is a boring game, with little action, less exciâ€" tement, and long enough to give the average person a good night‘s sleep. : Or so I thought until last Saturday night. On that occasion I was lured to the sixth soccer match of my entire life, partially through guilt and partially by obliâ€" gation. You see, playing in that game at Seagram Stadium were the Waterloo Athletic A‘s, the only soccer team in this city of any consequence outside of the tremendous minor soccer program. & You see, A‘s have received rather slipâ€"shod treatment from the media, the Waterloo Chronicle probably the prime offender. As this city‘s premier soccer club, they should be right up there with the biggies, but so far this year have been relegated to the back pages of the sports section, once without pictures that had been promised and another time er a field hockey headline. i ‘at’s what cultivated my guilt complex. en I heard early last week that the A‘s would be enterâ€" taining FC Olympia of West Germany in an exhibition _ A‘s, an underâ€"21 club, play out of the Ontario Amateur Soccer Development League, but I won‘t hold it against you if you didn‘t know that. â€" â€" Ee â€" (Corner of University & Lincoln) ,Glenridge Center â€" Waterloo DENICE TRAINED UNDER A MEMBER OF THE HAIR CUTTING TEAM OF CANADA | # |,| D £ [ Nee D J | ‘ I[|\ ¢/ / \{|!\{|| ||| Targa by Sheatfer tfor // / 1 the graduate / MM/ 5 ‘ | The sottâ€"spoken took oft . # AIY ‘/ brushed stainless steel ‘ MA 7 creates a new fashion Lo f / l ! statement in writing ; i L | instrument design f Targa by Sheatter # MB /«’ | is available as a 4 4 1 ! tountain pen, marker 4 es balipoint or pencil, in /* P P / gold, sitver and " a 4 i stainless steel |||“|| / Brushed stainless steel : #/ _z’ balilpoint and pencil sets 2A $25.00 C S RDECA LA ® SPECIALIZING IN HAIR CUTTING FOR WOMEN AND MEN SCHENDEL *CME 120 KING STREET SOUTH, WATERLOO â€" 886â€"1 1680 OFFICE FURNITURE » STA TIONERY » GIFTS Open daily to 5:45 p.m. olsA olA HAlR DESIGN IS PLEASED TO INTRODUCE brushed stainless steel creates a new fashion statement in writing instrument design Targa by Sheaftter is available as a tountain pen, marker balipoint or pencil, in / DENICE HORNE FOR APPOINTMENT Tel. 884â€"6050 So I bundled up warmly in the meatlocker that was Saturâ€" day night and headed to the stadium, all the while saying to myself to make sure to wake up in time to catch the number of the goalscorer, if there should be one. + I can now tell you it didn‘t quite work out that way. Not by a country mile.‘ "Hmmn, just the usual rigamarole,‘‘ I mused as the preâ€" game festivities were conducted. ‘"But no, wait a minute, it wasn‘t the same after all." As the teams and dignitaries were introduced, each reâ€" ceived a thunderous ovation from the hardy crowd of 400 that sounded more like 4,000. The Germans were welcomed graciously and the A‘s accorded a tremendous round of apâ€" plause. For the entire game those two teams of youngsters batâ€" tled tooth and nail as if they were challenging for the World Cup. There were dozens of scoring chances, plenty of solid football in midâ€"field and clever strategies in both zones. Quite fairly, the match ended in a 1â€"1 draw. Adulations in fact, that were only exceeded 90 minutes later when the teams left the field following an exhibition that could only be described in superlatives. match at Seagram Stadium Saturday. Drat, I said there‘s no way I can get out of that one. It would provoke an internaâ€" tional calamity. * â€" â€" _ A 4A«**"* ELECTRONICS 46 KING ST. They like to spread the play out which leads to wide open play while North Americans tend to bunch up and play it more physic¢al. We (Aâ€"s) had the choice to either cut them down or let them play. They let us play, we let them play, and it created many outstanding opâ€" portunities.‘" That was the understatement of the night. Granted there was a great deal of midâ€"field play, but the ball was steadily moving and two dozen athletes, not an ounce of fat on them, went full out to provide the spectators with much more than their money‘s worth. It was not the cold that kept them on the edge of their seats the entire night. It was socko entertainment. And guess what? The West German club will be returning home soon, but the A‘s have a full slate of home games, starting Sunday July 15 at 4 p.m. against Hamilton Legion. And I‘ll be there with bells on. Mainly because by lumping the A‘s in with the few soccer performances I have seen in the past, I have cheated myself out of some great sports action. * And for that, I deserve a swift cornerâ€"kick in the pants.
